Intro: *New* Altoids Pocket Survival Kit

This is an update to my old survival kit
I will be going more into detail with this one
Read carefully because there is some good info.
I know this kit isn't much but its better to have this then nothing.
Enjoy~!

STEP 1: Contents

  • I have allot of stuff in a straw because i think its compact and water proof
  • Empty Altoids can
  • Tin foil
  • 3 bandages
  • 1 straw whistle
  • 2 teas in straw(have a tutorial on those)
  • Roll of duct tape
  • 1 coffee filter
  • Razor blade
  • 3 safety pins
  • 1 sinker
  • Roll of fishing line
  • thread
  • 2 advils in a straw
  • 2 small and 2 large matches in straw
  • 1 birthday candle
  • Magnesium shavings in a straw
  • Dryer lint in straw

STEP 2: Fire!

Fire is very important in survival. And your fire making tool has to stay dry so I chose a water proof mach holder. And if its dry I"ll use the matches in the survival kit because I don't want to use the water proof ones up. Tinder is also required  to start a fire and makes it way easier.

STEP 3: Advil

Advil's are very useful in survival also. Trust me you don't want a headache while you are fighting for your life. You bring other pain killer pills but I like Advil.

STEP 4: Water

You can only go 3 days without water so this is essential. I put a coffee filter in my survival kit, i is not going to do much but still clean the water very well. You can then boil the water in your Altoids can to get rid of almost all the bad germs in the water and the water is now drinkable.

STEP 5: Small Candle

This birthday candles main purpose in this kit is for fire. But it can also be used to create water proof matches. Besides it takes up so little space.

STEP 6: Dryer Lint and Magnesium Shavings

Dryer lint lights up very quik with just a spark. If your going to put a fire steel in your survival kit then put some prepared magnesium shavings for a boost!

STEP 7: Cutting Tool

I put a razor blade in my kit because it is sharp and small. I can probably use this to skin a animal to just cut something. I put tape on the blade to keep it from cutting other stuff in my kit.

STEP 8: Repairs and Other

I put Neosporin because it kills all the germs and the wound and bandages to stop the bleeding. I put 3 safety pins because you can stitch clothes together so make a hook for fishing,l along with fishing I put one weight. Fishing line can be used for snares or fishing. Some duct tape is useful for anything. Thread can also repair clothes or can be used as fishing line. I made a small whistle with a straw. Tea is very tasty if you have nothing else. Lastly I put salt in a straw for any animal I catch to make it taste better.

Where can we get Magnesium Shavings? Wal-Mart? I have no idea where to look for Magnesium Shavings!

you'll have to make your own; a magnesium bar is $5 or less at Wal-Mart, Harbor Freight, etc. Shave one corner with a serrated blade (a short piece of hacksaw blade works well) and collect the shavings in e.g. a bottle cap, then pop them into a container that will survive being knocked about -- I would use a sealed straw or very small pill bottle, rather than risk them in just a plastic bag.

If you can't get magnesium shavings you can use wax shavings. Every time I shave down a candle for candlesticks here at home, I save them for outdoor fires. I don't use them in a fireplace due to creosote build up, but once the wax melts over the wood chips or kindling, it burns really well!

Good idea BudgetBugout your channel rocks. Maybe try to add a Folgers can "poor mans oven" to put in a backpack.

I see you've updated your kit! I see you have a razor blade but you might wanna include a good knife as well.

Check out my instructable for a good knife option! :)
Michael, Thanks for this instructible; it's pretty wonderful. I've just got a few questions; I hope you'll forgive me if I'm being a bit dense. I get that the sinker and the fishing line are for catching fish and I imagine that's one of the possible uses for the safety pins. What's the function of the tin foil (just got it: cooking the fish?)? Did you put the duct tape around a straw? If not, how is it done? Lastly, what's the function of the coffee filter? I'm going to go now to look at your "straw as storage medium" instruction.
Hi, for the tin foil you can also use it for signaling, or even starting a fire which is a bit hard. For the duct tape straw thing i took paper and wrap around the straw, then get duct tape and start wrapping. when done cut for access paper. i did this so you can take the duct tape out. coffee filter can filter water.
OK, I just looked at the Instructables you've posted and saw the one about straws as fire starters. Did you say you have one about tea straws? From this survival kit it looks like you have many uses for straws; can you tell me different ways that you use them?
store mates in them like u did and they have mulit uses
u just won a new follower :D
hoping u will make more stuff
Great ible! You must have had a lot of straws lying around your house...

Love the idea! I will def be doing that. Most of the things I can get at a dollar store. Great idea being so compact, and discreet. Pretty smart what you put in there also.
Was just thinking what else I could add..
not really 'survivor' need but maybe a small toothpaste could fit..
And you do have matches, but maybe a tiny key chain flashlight also..
I can't really think of anything else, it's got all the basics really.
I will for sure make one, I appreciate you sharing and the pictures/instructions all very well done.
Good work! 5 stars!
Oh just realized you do have a flashlight, sorry lol.
Please leave comments on what you think!!
