A simple instructable to show how to charge any DS from USB.
STEP 1: Parts.
1. Any USB cable
2. Any DS
3. A Spare DS Charger
4. Soldering iron and Solder (Not needed, but highly reccomended)
5. Wire Strippers or Scissors
6. Electrical Tape
7. 10-15 minutes of time.

STEP 2: Cutting and Stripping the Wires.
Take your wire strippers or scissors to the wires and cut the cables at about halfway.
Take the USB connector (Type 'A') and your DS connector (Lite, DSi or Phat) and strip about an inch off each wire, DO NOT cut any thing off yet.
If some wire came off when you stripped don't worry, it should still work.
There will be 4-7 different things in your USB cable, I had: String (no idea..), Foil (shielding), shielding (shielding), Data + (Green), Data - (white), Power (Red) and Earth (Black). Remove everything EXCEPT Power (Red) and Earth (Black).
Strip about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch off of them and put to the side.
Now take your DS cable, strip about an inch off take what looks like shielding and DO NOT cut it off, separate it and twirl it (:.
There should then be a Single Cable left in the middle, strip about 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch off of it and twirl that (:

STEP 3: Connecting Up.
Simply twirl the Red from the USB around the power for the DS and the earth round the earth, plug in and test, it should be charging.
If not ensure that a good connection is being made.
Now that you know it works solder it together and tape it up!

Alternatively, I've tried on a PC laptop with no result either. Any ideas?

I would say use a AC to USB adapter, but since the whole point of the project is to get rid of the wall wart, I don't really know... At least if you brought your iPad and ds, you would only have to pack one adapter.
Also, I wouldn't reccomend using an iPod or iPhone adapter because I'm pretty sure they are only 1 amp chargers and if I remember correctly, the DS wall wart gave it two (amps).
Hope this helps!
