Who would have guessed that the tassel, once the staid and stuffy trimming on grandma's draperies, would become the runway-beloved, haute couture accessory to reference all sorts of time-defying looks. From flapper fringe and 70s boho, to naughty burlesque a la Dita Von Teese, the tassle is our go-to inspiration for quick and sexy DIY styling.

Check out how easy it is to transform embroidery thread into your own tassel, and use everyday jewelry supplies like chain and jump rings to quickly make a fun pair of swingy earrings in all the colors of the rainbow. Make 'em to match every outfit!

Step 1: Step 1

Cut a piece of cardboard roughly twice the length you want your tassel to be and fold in half. Begin wrapping your thread around the cardboard piece. The amount of times you wrap your thread around will determine the thickness of your tassel.

Step 2: Step 2

Once you've finished wrapping, turn your piece of cardboard over and cut the thread in between where one end of the cardboard meets the other.

Step 3: Step 3

Grab your tassel securely by the end and begin wrapping using one of the loose pieces of thread.

Step 4: Step 4

Once you've securely wrapped the end of your tassel, you can glue the end of the tread in place using super glue or craft glue. If your piece of thread is longer you can also secure by threading it through the wrapping and knotting off the end.

Step 5: Step 5

Now to assemble your earring! You'll need a jump ring, piece of chain cut to your desired length, and earring hook.  Begin by sliding the jump ring through a few strands of thread at the top of your tassel loop.  Then attach one end of the chain by sliding it onto your jump ring.  Attach the other end of your chain to the jump ring and you're done!
