Introduction: Old Book New Purpose

Turning an old book into a bookshelf art piece. My wife and I had first initial book ends from when we bought our house so when my daughter was born I decided to make this project.

Supplies

Old Book

Masking Tape

Screws

Scroll Saw or Bandsaw

White Glue/ Mod Podge

Clamps

Step 1: Taping Off the Book

In order to keep the book together you will need to tape it on all three of the open sides. Do this as tight as you can. I used clamps to compress the book while I taped it.

Step 2: Screws and Template

Next thing to do is find the letter or object you want to cut out. I covered the front of my book with tape and used paper glued down to hold it in place. Once that was done, I put two screws into the middle of the book making sure not to get too close to the letter or go all the way through the book.

Step 3: Cutting Out the Design

I have a bandsaw so that is what I used but you could use a scroll saw to cut the design out. On my letter S, I squared off the back and front of the letter so there was more of the spine to hold the book together after it was cut out. If you plan on glueing the edges with White glue or Mod Podge you might not need to do this.
