Introduction: Opportunities and Settings of Point Welding - WerkplaatsIDC

In this instructable we, Yorick, Jos and Leonard will show you how exacly works point welding. The do and don'ts in this weld method

"Spot welding is a welding process that is applied mainly on thin metal plates without adding material."

Did you know this?

High processing speed possible

Easy to use

Easy to learn

Only possible to thin sheet material to weld, in the order of 0.5-3 mm thick.

Not at any place possible : both sides of the material should be accessible by the electrodes.

The welding plates about as thick (at most a factor 3 difference).

There is a chance of inclusions as the surface of the parts to be welded not properly clean.

The welding are pointed, making the weld is not as strong as a weld the full length of the seam.

Aluminum sheets can be used but are not ideal as it doesn't conduct like other metals.

Step 1: What Do You Need?

- Point welding machine

- Gloves

- Steel bars (max 3mm thickness)

- Safety glasses

Step 2: Types of Connections

First we will show you what you need to DO for a good result

You have two types of connections by point welding

1st: Continued connection : the 2 profiles are melted together in such a way that there is no difference in elevation is

2st: trapped connection : the 2 profiles are melted together in such a way that there is a step creates

"The continued connection is the strongest connection of them both"

Step 3: Starting Process

When you want to start with spot welding, there are a number of things that need to happen:

Step 1 : To turn on the machine place the switch on "1"

Step 2: Open the faucet that provides cooling mach

Step 4: Materials

With spot welding it is only possible tou se the material steel (0,5 to 3 mm thickness)

- steel plate

- steel profiles

With steel bars is very useful when building fast models!!

Welding aluminium is not easy! so for point welding we need to put the settings on Max power and a short time of welding.

Step 5: Introduction Machine

This welding machine is actually a very simple apparatus with few options on, there are only 2 rotary buttons present

1. POWER button: this determined how much power you through the eletroden and workpiece hunts.

2. TIME button: this determined how long the same flow through your work piece hunts.

The final welding done on the basis of a foot controlbar!

Step 6: Trapped Connection

with this kind of connection we want to confirm in such a way that the 2 rods welding ON each other

This is how you do it:

- place 2 bars ON each other

- place the overlap between the 2 electrodes

- push the controlbar down until the noise is down

Watch out for the sparks at the contact of the 2 electrodes and your project!!

Conclusion:

For a clean trapped connection put your POWER on 5 and the TIME on 5

When your power and time is too low, the 2 bars are not attached to each other (pic. 4 & 5)

When your power and time is too high, he 2 bars are too much melted into each other and as a result they has not a strong connection (pic. 9 & 10 & 11 & 12)

Step 7: Continued Connection

with this kind of connection we want to confirm in such a way that the 2 rods welding IN each other

This is how you do it:

- place 2 bars ON or next to each other

- place the parts between the 2 electrodes

- push the controlbar down until the noise is down

Watch out for the sparks at the contact of the 2 electrodes and your project!!

Conclusion:

For a clean continued connection put your POWER on 6 and the TIME on 6

When your power and time is too low, the 2 bars are not attached to each other (pic. 5 & 6)

When your power and time is too high, he 2 bars are too much melted into each other and as a result they has not a strong connection (pic. 11 & 12 & 13 & 14)

Step 8: Sheet Connection

For a sheet connection you need 2 sheets of steel (max 3mm)

The working principle is exactly the same as with the previous:

- you place your 2 sheets between the electrodes with a few centimetres overlap

- push the controlebar down and wait until the noise is down

The picture shows you the evolution from low to hight power.

"How more power throught the elektrodes how bigger the print of the elektrodes and how stronger the connection!"

Step 9: Iron Wire

Iron wire is thread with a thickness of 1mm

(This type of thread is ideal for a quick scale model)

Conclusion:

For a clean continued connection put your POWER on 5 and the TIME on 5

For a clean Trapped connection put your POWER on 4 and the TIME on 4

Step 10: Example: Phone Tripot

Step 1: Measuring roughly how big you are going to make each component before you cut. Besides rough measurements of the total large which will help you to form an image.

Step 2: Cut all 5 the body parts.

Step 3: Fold all parts in shape. The legs fold you haven't completely close. Otherwise you will have problems afterwards with aanlassen of the back.

Step 4: Weld all the parts to each other. Follow the order as indicated on the sketch

Step 11: What You Should NOT Do

NEVER work without gloves!

NEVER work without safety glasses!

NEVER hold your work piece during the contact of the electrodes!

We hope you can use the tips and tricks in your prototypes.
GOOD LUCK and SAFETY FIRST!
