Introduction: DIY - Origami Based Sturdy Phone Stand - Minimalist, Easy and Low Material Requirement

About: Eco-friendly and creativity is the way !!!

The primary aim of this craft is to make a sturdy phone stand with minimal wastage, minimal cuts, with easily available materials and at the same time being eco-friendly.

This is inspired this origami mentioned in the video above.

Supplies

  1. Soft/Thin or normal Cardboard (8 inches x 4 inches)
  2. Cutter / Scissors
  3. Glue / super glue / Tape

Using a softer/thinner cardboard specifically non-corrugated cardboard for e.g., mobile phone box, headphone box even as simple as book cover !!! will simplify the process of folding but that doesn’t mean you can’t use normal cardboard for this.

Sidenote: You can even use paper / card paper like the one shown below but it will not stand the test of time.

Step 1: The Templating

For simplicity I have used paper and i request you to do the same for prototyping before working directly on cardboard.

  1. Prepare a cardboard piece measuring 8 inches x 4 inches (approx. 20cm x 10 cm to be even pun intended) Make the following markings on the cardboard according to the image. (IMG-1)
  2. Now fold it into half along the crease line. (IMG-2)

Step 2: Making the Back Support OR the Big Pyramid

  1. Make a cut across the diagonal till the center on the first half.
  2. Fold it across the all the diagonals to the center.
  3. Now glue the hanging part inside.
  4. You should get a pyramid shape on the first half like the image. Glue the creases to make it stronger.

Step 3: Making the Stopper OR the Small Pyramid

  1. On the other side, mark the half of the diagonal.
  2. Cut across one diagonal till the center as done for the above pyramid
  3. Draw a square joining the marked portions. Make a cut till the marked portion.
  4. Now fold the flaps (the tips of triangle) internally till the square markings on all sides. This is required otherwise it will block the viewing when the phone is placed in the seat!
  5. Finally fold across the diagonals to create pyramid and glue the areas

Step 4: Done Enjoy Your Pyramid Stand

Viola your phone stand is ready to be used.

Step 5: Worst Case Scenarios

Now there might some possible worst case scenarios you might encounter

Scenario- 1: I don’t have a single cardboard piece of the measurement but have two separate pieces

Answer: After making the pyramids you can just join both the pieces using tape or glue it with a piece of paper at the bottom (refer IMG-2)

Scenario- 2: I have one big piece and one small piece

Cool use the small piece to build the second pyramid and glue it to big pyramid as scenario-1

Scenario- 3: The seating became too deep

Use a pencil (preferably non-circular shaped) to pop up your phone
