Introduction: Origami Pleated Chess King and Queen

About: A fellow hobbyist venturing into creative ideas

In order to complete my paper chess set, I decided to create a King and a Queen having already created a Pawn. This piece has been implemented using an origami pleat fold. The crown has been created with a separate piece of small strip of paper. The piece has been printed out with a printer first and then folded as per instructions in order to achieve the final result. The same piece without the crown is a Queen.

Supplies

  1. Printer/ Printed image on a sheet of paper, (resize as per requirements keeping the ratio as the same.
  2. The reference image for printout.
  3. Pair of scissors.
  4. Printable paper, I have used A4 sheet, one can also use any other hard paper.
  5. Stapler/ Glue to stick the two ends together.
  6. A small strip of paper to make the crown.

Step 1: Print the Reference Image

  1. Print the given reference image.
  2. Resize as per requirement.
  3. Make a note of red and blue line colors.

Step 2: Fold Along the Reference Lines

  1. Start folding along the reference lines.
  2. Red lines are valley folds.
  3. All blue lines are mountain folds except the bottom one which denotes a valley fold.
  4. For easiness, fold the bottom of the piece in valley fold and the corresponding triangular shapes as well, try to stretch this part into a curve bottom shape to give support to the chess piece.

Step 3: Join the Two Ends

Once all folds are finalized, make sure all folds have been practiced at least once and implemented.

Now, join the two vertical ends of the piece with a piece of paper and glue.

Step 4: Implement the Folds With the 3D Piece

  1. Keeping in note the folds, start to create a 3D shape with the head and rotate the piece to maintain the folds.
  2. As shown in the image, it should have the following shape by now.

Step 5: Create the Crown

  1. Take a small strip of paper.
  2. Fold it in half as shown in Picture 2.
  3. Fold one side sideways to create a perpendicular shape.
  4. Fold the other end to the opposite side to create another perpendicular shape.
  5. Fold the top of the crown to shorten it.
  6. Refer the image, it should look like the last image.
  7. Glue the paper so that the crown is stiff and sturdy.

Step 6: Attach the Crown at Top of the Head

  1. Place the crown at the top of the head.
  2. The chess piece for a King and a Queen are ready.
  3. Protect it with all your Pawns and Knights and Bishops.
  4. Enjoy!
