HELLO AND WELCOME BACK !!!!

Understanding and playing with plasma arcs ( the 4th state of matter ) is quite interesting but do we have a complete knowledge about it or can we build one on our own !!!!

AS being a fan of plasma arcs I thought why not to create a high voltage plasma power source that could spit out plasma arcs . Plasma arcs are fascinating to look at and can sooth you for a while ! It has a lot of applications and plasma physics is a vast field of study .

So This build is gonna be mind blowing

LET'S GET STARTED !!!!!

Supplies

* FLYBACK TRANSFORMER (OLD CRT TV'S OR TIG MACHINES)

* A RAY GUN KIND OF THING

* 10 - 15 VOLTAGE POWER SOURCE

* T0 220 HEAT SINK

* SOLID CORE WIRES

* IRF Z44 N N CHANNEL MOSFET OR SOME POWER MOSFETS

* 150 OHM RESISTORS

Step 1: WATCH THE VIDEO FIRST

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING THE PLASMA POWER SOURCE AS WELL AS THE CIRCUIT !!!

Step 2: FLYBACK TRANSFORMERS

Flyback transformers are one of the most widely use high voltage source . SO where can you get it You ask ?? You can find it in OLD CRT TV'S or maybe you can buy it online .

NOTE ON FLYBACKS : Flyback transformer is the a ferrite core transformer with few primary windings and a lot of secondary windings . After supplying a voltage of around 10 volts you will get and output of around 18000 - 20000 volts . There are a lot of videos about flybacks . But one quick note if you are not able to determine the primary windings as they are difficult to find So instead wind 2 turns then center tap the other 2 turns .

Step 3: GOING THROUGH THE SUPPLIES

The most crucial thing here is a flyback transformer , as you can se i have just burned the primary windings and now have to make my own primary with some thick coated red copper wire !!!!

We need a mosfet as a fast switching device with low rds(on). and a huge heat sink , 150 ohm gate driving resistor . a prototyping board and a ray gun kind of thing salvaged from some old pcb .

Step 4: UNDERSTANDING THE SCHEMATIC

SCHEMATIC is quite easy to understand ,

FIrstly we supply 12 to 15 volts at the screw terminals , The supplied voltage turns the gate on through the winding and as soon as the gate turns on the drain to source path become active and induces a voltage in secondary and after a while the saturation of ferrite core turns the gate off through a feedback winding

THIS switching madness goes on and on

Switching frequency is around 15 khz and thats where the audible frequency lies .

Step 5: START BUILDING

Firstly I started with fixing the ray gun kind of thing and a screw terminal around 5 cm apart and then added the flyback transformer gate driving resistor of 150 ohm and a mosfet with a huge heat sink and lastly added screw terminals for supply .

And basically we are done !!!!

Step 6: DIFFERENT INERT GASES GLOWING IN PLASMA

XENON ARGON NEON AND KRYPTON ARE INERT GASES THAT GLOW IN PRESENCE OF HIGH VOLTAGE !!!
