Intro: Peppers Holographic Watch Built in Minutes!

Watching all the hologram smart phone builds like this one:

https://www.instructables.com/id/Amazing-3D-Project...

Had me thinking about making something similar but for my smart watch. This will only take you a few minutes with a 3D printer and a old CD case. I call it the P.E.P.P.E.R. watch attachment.

Why the P.E.P.P.E.R. (Polarized Enhanced Projected Plastic E.S.T.B. Reflector) watch attachment? What's a E.S.T.B. you ask? Read Simon Pegg's Auto biography Nerd do well http://www.amazon.com/Nerd-Do-Well-Journey-Becomin... . You will find in it there called the 'Electro Static Time Ball' . In the book there is a nice bit of fun fiction with this sentient device. Lastly it is based on the magic trick called Peppers ghost, thus PEPPER.

But you do not want a story you want a build on how to make yourself one. So...

What you will need:

  1. 3D printer or someone you can get to print one of the attachments for you or a service like http://www.shapeways.com/ that will make one for you once you upload the file to them
  2. 3D STL file found here at Thingiverse here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1559513
  3. A old CD case
  4. Utility knife
  5. Cutting mat
  6. find grit sandpaper (60-120ish)
  7. Ruler
  8. Fine tip sharpie
  9. Painters tape.

STEP 1: 3D Print the Attachement

3D print this little bad boy. It press fits on the 42mm Apple watch.

I used 0.1mm layer thickness with supports

Break off the support material and this step is done. On my Kossel mini it took 25min to print.

STEP 2: Cut Out the Screen

Take your old CD case and rip off the top clear cover and discard the remainder

Apply painters tape from the hardware store to the surface to keep it from getting scratched and to give yourself some marking area

Draw out the rectangle needed for the screen 1-11/32" wide and 1-7/8" long with a ruler and fine tip sharpie.

Cut it out of the plastic with a utility knife

Clean up the edges with some fine grit sandpaper and round the edges

Take the tape off and on to the next step...

STEP 3: Find or Make Video and Get It on Your Apple Watch

So here is something you will be on your own for. You need to find video or make video to text to yourself to play on the apple watch so this will be broken down into two parts. 1. Video rules, 2, how to play it on your watch

Video Rules

  1. Black backgrounds are the best
  2. You can find stock video of things like birds or the static ball I show in the ible and add your own stuff via your favourite video editing app. Pro tip: Youtube has a easy video editor to help with this https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/183851?h...
  3. Text will need to be upside down and backwards to work, think of it as how you would write it in a mirror
  4. Video will need to be turned 90 degrees to landscape to play properly on the screen.
  5. Video resolution should be lower than 480p

How to play it on your Apple watch

  1. Get the video on your phone some how and text it to yourself
  2. If you have a mac then open the messenger app and text it to yourself
  3. on your watch click on the messanger app and open the text you sent
  4. click on the video on the text time line
  5. Hit play

Voila you have just activated your P.E.P.P.E.R watch attachment!

Have fun and show me what you make in the comments below or share your videos so everyone can have

Nice work. I made one too. Thanks.

I great way to watch videos on all electronics
There are many projects like this for the iPhone. Look up '3D hologram iphone'

I'm guessing you can use this with other smartwatches, right? It's a very cool idea!

Sure! The 3D print will need to be modified to work with the shape of each watch though

That's really well done, Does it interfere with using the watch at all?

You can use the watch easily when the reflector is removed easily

Genius Work Man

Keep up the good stuff
