Supplies

Step 1: Cut Stock to Size

The great thing about this project is that you can buy the dimensioned wood off the shelf. However, if you will be ripping your own pieces, make a (1) 1×4, (1) 1×3, and (1) 1×2. I cut all of those pieces to 7' long since this filled my wall the best.

Step 2: Sand and Glue

It is easiest to sand at this step since it isn't glued together yet. I used my orbital sander  to do this. Once sanded, glue the 1x3 to the 1x4 and clamp it together. While clamped, drill the 1.5″ wood screws in from the back. Once that is dried, you will glue the 1x2 to the front. Be sure to pre-drill  holes to prevent splitting.

Step 3: Stain and Seal

Use the stain of your choice - I used this stain since it went with my space the best. I also added this sealer to give it a finished look.

Step 4: Attach to the Wall

Since this will hold significant weight, attach the picture ledge directly into the studs with a stud finder. Pre-drill one hole in the center, attach it to the first stud, then pivot the piece with the level. Then, attach it to the remaining studs.

Step 5: Decorate
