Plastic Flute

Intro: Plastic Flute

Heres how to make a plastic flute using only scraps. It should only take about 15 minutes.

STEP 1: Sand the Pipe

Start by sanding off the ugly letters. I used 150 grit sandpaper for this, but that's a bit coarse. You might want to go a bit finer, perhaps 220 grit. Beware the fumes! Do not use power tools for this!

STEP 2: Mark the Holes

Mark where the mouth and finger holes are going to be. My finger holes are about 1/2" apart. Just look at the picture.

STEP 3: Drill the Holes

Drill the where you marked them. Then, using a larger drill bit, bevel the edges of the holes, like a countersink.

STEP 4: Carve the Plug and Hammer It In

Carve a plug for the mouth end of the pipe. I used a coarse rasp. Then tap it into the end of the pipe.

STEP 5: Done!

Congratulations, you are done! I've done this with copper pipe too and it does look better that way.

Did you think about tuning this flute?
I didn't. I suppose the easiest way would be to copy an existing flute for key spacing. The wooden plug can be adjusted as well.
