Introduction: Plastic Grocery Bag Dispenser

Necessary Items:

  • Clorox (or any brand) cylindrical canister of any size
    • 75 Wipes container fits ~50 bags
    • 35 Wipes container fits ~25 bags
  • Plastic Grocery Bags
  • Velcro Command strips (if you want to hang container)

For Fun Design:

  • Paint
  • Sharpie
  • Duct Tape
  • Fabric
  • Washi Tape

Step 1: Rinse Your Container

Start by rinsing the container you are going to be filling with bags. You want this as clean as possible. If it is not, your bags will smell and possibly be sticky from the leftover cleaning chemicals.

Step 2: Preparing the Bags

Lay the bag on the ground, and flatten it so that the air is pushed out.

Step 3: Fold the Bag in Half

Next, you will take the bag and fold it in half, so that the handles lay one over the other.

Step 4: Add Another Bag

Lay one folded bag down, then lay the handles of another folded bag over the bottom of the first bag.

Step 5: Continue Adding Bags

Repeat steps 2-4 with each following bag.

2. Lay the bag flat on the ground and push out the air.

3. Fold the bag in half so that the handles are lying on top of each other.

4. Place the handles of the last bag over the bottom of the previous bag.

Step 6: Fold the Handles of the First Bag

Once you have all of your bags overlapped, fold the handle of the first bag back over the bag so that it sticks out to the side.

Step 7: Start Rolling the Bags

Roll the bags together, starting from the end with the folded handle.

Step 8: *TIPS* Holding Down Handles

For ease of rolling, tuck in handles of each proceeding bag as you roll over it. If too many handles are not tucked in, it will impede your ability to roll the bags tightly and you will fit fewer bags into the container.

Step 9: *TIPS* If You Don't Have Enough Space

If you don't have enough space, you don’t need to lay all bags out at once. You can roll a few at a time and lay out more bags on an as-needed basis. All you need to do is leave the end of the last bag that you roll visible, and then place the handles of the first bag from the next line of bags over the end and continue to roll.

Step 10: Squeeze Out Air

When you have finished rolling together your bags, squeeze out the air. Your end product should be a tube of plastic bags.

Step 11: Place the Roll of Bags in the Container

Push the roll of plastic bags into your container. Depending on how tightly you roll the bags, you may need to force the bags into the container. A container that has 75 wipes can hold approximately 50 standard plastic grocery bags, and a container of 35 wipes can hold approximately 25 bags. After you have placed them in the container, place the lid on and pull the bags through the hole in the lid.

Step 12: * OPTIONAL* Decorate Your Container

If you want, you can decorate the container to fit your personal style. You can use paint, duct tape, markers, fabric, washi tape, or any decorating material you want. As two easy examples, we painted one container blue and put washi tape around the edge of its lid, and we duct taped the other container.

Step 13: *OPTIONAL* Adding a Command Strip

If you want to hang the canister, add a velcro Command strip to the back of your container and attach the other side to a wall. Enjoy your Plastic Grocery Bag Dispenser!
