I decided to make an inversion trainer as a gift. This apparatus helps people learn to do upside down yoga type maneuvers. It’ll eventually get a cushion on top.

Tools Required

Table saw/ Circular saw
- Most saws will work to cut the rough shapes
Jigsaw
- This will help you cut out the curves and complex shapes
sander/sandpaper
- Fortunately, I had some power sanders to help, but this could all be achieved with sandpaper and elbow grease
Drill
Router
- This is optional as the edges can be rounded over with sandpaper

Supplies

1/2" baltic birch plywood
wood glue
screws
cushion materials

Step 1: Prepare a Template

I started by creating a template piece for the legs of the apparatus. I will be cutting 10 leg pieces out of 1/2” plywood and laminating them together, 5 per side, to make each leg

Step 2: Cut Out the Legs

Use the template to trace out the leg shapes
Use the jigsaw to cut out the leg shapes. Try to be close to the line to minimize sanding and such
Here I am doing some preliminary sanding to get the pieces to line up decently for the glue up
The actual design doesn’t have long braces from front to back and I was a little nervous about it flexing and breaking so here I am using the table saw to cut those braces.

Step 3: Think It Through....

Here is me trying to determine what to do next. This one wasn’t really necessary to keep but it liked seeing the gears turning in my head haha

Step 4: Glue It Up

This is the glue up. You can see the cross brace is integrated into the leg.

Step 5: Sand It Down

Pretty self explanatory. make it smooooooooth

Step 6: Round Over the Edges

I used a palm sander and homemade router table to round over all the edges and make it nice and smooth. I really dig how Baltic birch looks all glued and smoothed.

Step 7:

Here are the legs all sanded and smoothed up.
Added the short braces to connect it all together

Step 8: Test!

Taking it for a spin. It works! Hope you enjoyed!

It will eventually get a cushion on top to make it a bit more comfortable to use.
