Intro: Power Your Car With a FISSION REACTOR!

Its now the year 2015 and humanity is beginning to make significant advances in the production and application of alternative fuels. In the famed trilogy, Back to the Future, we were awestruck by the thought of future technology... Well, it's here!

In the memorable scene, Doc Brown pulls up, "I need fuel!" he exclaims. The eccentric scientist then reaches for a half drank beverage, pours it in a device and powers his vehicle. Science-fiction, you say? Impossible? Not anymore!

Today, we are going to convert our vehicle to use electricity to split molecules and release a high powered fuel to supplement our vehicle's energy supply... and it's a lot easier than it sounds!

What we'll be doing is converting our vehicle to a hydrogen hybrid wherein electricity is used to supplement the gasoline with a sustainable, inexpensive to produce, carbon emission-free super fuel.

Let's gather our equipment and get started!

STEP 1: Gather the Parts

We are going to convert our vehicle in to a hydrogen-powered hybrid in just 3 easy steps. To get started we'll need to gather some parts.

First, and most importantly, we'll need the unit that produces the fuel. This device is an all-in-one reactor capable of producing 150 liters of hydrogen fuel per hour. In addition, we will need to power the unit with a supplementary battery and connect the output to our engine's intake.

The parts list is as follows:

(1) PERSONAL FISSION REACTOR

(+/-25 ft.) 3/8 Braided Fuel Line

(1) Modified Intake Manifold(optional)

(1) 12v Deep Cycle Battery

(1) 1000w 12v Power Inverter

(1) 12v Battery Charger

Various mounting hardware, hose ties, L-brackets and screws, zip-ties, extension cord, etc.

Alternatively, full kits are available at www.DrFission.com which come with a detailed instruction manual.

STEP 2: Install Reactor

Similarly to the configuration of the legendary DeLorean, we will be mounting our new PERSONAL FISSION REACTOR™ in the rear of the vehicle, away from heat and where there is sufficient space.

We will remove the device from its packaging and find a convenient space in the enclosed trunk of the vehicle where it will fit in an upright position. Choose a place that is out of the way (but still shows off your new modification) and allows access to the rear of the unit and the access window. Once a space is identified, simply place the unit in the trunk and secure with screws or L-brackets, if necessary.

STEP 3: Install and Connect Power

There are three parts to connecting power to your PERSONAL FISSION REACTOR™.

First, install your 12v Deep Cycle Battery. Find a location in the rear of the vehicle as you see fit. Use of a battery strap or box may be required depending on your particular vehicle.

Next, mount your 12v Inverter on or near the dashboard with access to the on switch and view of the indicator light unobstructed. You'll now run an extension cord and the input cables from the rear of the vehicle, under door jam covers, under the dash to your Inverter. Making sure the Inverter is switched off, secure the input wires to the battery terminals and connect the output cord to your PERSONAL FISSION REACTOR™.

Note that Relays and Wiring can be included from the manufacturer to automatically power up your system with the vehicle's ignition. See details in the manual that accompanied your unit.

Lastly, mount the Battery Charger somewhere convenient, attach the included connectors to the Battery and place the Charger's power cord somewhere easily accessible for overnight charging.

Note that multiple Batteries can be used in conjunction with multiple reactor systems. See details in the manual that accompanied your unit.

STEP 4: Connect Fuel

The last step is to connect the fuel, which is produced by your reactor, to the intake of your engine. But, first we'll fill our unit and test our system. To do so add we'll fill our unit with E-Water an electrolytic solution to prime our system (future fill-ups simply require distilled water, see details in the included manual). Then, we will set the power switch on the PERSONAL FISSION REACTOR™ to "ON." Lastly, making sure you are in a well-ventilated area with no open flames, power on the system by using the switch on the Inverter which has been mounted to the dashboard. The PERSONAL FISSION REACTOR™ should begin to roar with bubbles as it splits the molecules of water and releases hydrogen fuel.

Once everything is operating properly, we'll proceed to connect this fuel supply to our engine's intake.

First, we will install our Customized Intake Manifold which can be removed from the engine block, sent in, modified and returned, then re-installed. Re-connect the air intake connections and we're ready to connect the new fuel line(s). (Alternatively, fuel line can be more easily attached by fitting a hose barb to the air intake directly, though results may vary.)

Once your Customized Intake Manifold is installed, we will connect one end of our Braided Fuel Line to the output of the PERSONAL FISSION REACTOR™ and secure. We will then run the fuel line under the door jam covers, through the firewall and into the engine compartment. Make sure to avoid kinks, sharp edges and areas prone to high heat and see further precautions in the included manual. Once your fuel line has been routed, connect to the Hydrogen Intake Manifold's 3/8" barb connection(s) and secure in place.

STEP 5: Your Hydrogen Hybrid Conversion Is Complete!

That's it! once you have installed your PERSONAL FISSION REACTOR™, connected the power and fuel line, the conversion is complete.

Now, you will be able to supplement your engine's fuel with the flip of a switch after starting your engine. Not only that, but this fuel is produced cost-efficiently with electricity, greatly reduces overall vehicle emissions and increases horsepower and gas mileage!*

To maintain your system, simply plug your charger in overnight and after extended drive times and keep your PERSONAL FISSION REACTOR'S™ tank topped off with distilled water.

Try adding solar panels or charging your system with renewable energy, convert your hot-rod or your fuel-sipper to a hydrogen powered hybrid and show us your conversions in the comments!

Among other things, the title is misleading. "Molecular Fission" is just a buzzword for electrolysis. The term "Fission Reactor" is almost universally used (with this Instructable being a notable exception) to refer to Nuclear Fission, and This Ain't It.

You probably would be better off using all those deep-cycle batteries to power electric motors to help propel the car... But either way, all you'll have is a coal-powered car, because coal is generating the electricity to charge the battery to electrolyse the water so you can burn the hydrogen.

Unfortunately, when grid power is used to charge batteries (in this application or an electric car), you're right, chances are the energy is coming from coal plant. But by charging your batteries with a solar array this fuel is produced by the most renewable resources at our disposal, sunlight and water.

water is regrettably not as renewable as you'd think, not potable water at least. there's almost as much, if not more research being made into water desalination and purification as there is into renewable energy. take your ads away from here, you're not helping the website or your credibility.
If you could afford the solar array to make enough hydrogen to power your car you'd be better off efficiency wise to run the car as a hybrid or on batteries. I'm disappointed they allow you to keep this ad for your product as an instructable. Spam.

When I looked at the "fission reactor" website, I thought, "this is not nuclear fission, this is just an electrolysis battery!" Shame on whoever named it that. Caveat to whoever wants to buy this, you might as well just use a cheaper battery. Pretty cool, though. I have a video on Electrolysis, with some explosions thrown in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e84CiuEnye8

Me thinks this is an instructable disguised ad for a website promising more than it can deliver. And your argument comparing the energy used to extract, transport, and refine oil to the energy benefits of this fancy, feel-good, renewable energy electrolysis gizmo falls flat to sway an argument. I'd really like to see something effectively replace our reliance on oil, but that dream is a long way off and products like this, in my opinion only, hurt the quest, because they don't deliver the results, much more than they help.

All the same, thank you for posting, hopeful it will inspire a discussion.
This isn't fission; it's electrolysis

Yes, electrolysis is the process that is occurring and "molecular fission" or splitting of the molecules is the result.

Fission is the splitting of an atom; not the splitting of a molecule.

Fission is to split. Here we are dealing with molecular fission, not atomic fission, correct.

You are creating nothing. This process uses electricity (inefficiently) to split what is essentially stored sunlight and retrieve less energy than was used to split it. Better efficiency can be achieved by using the electricity directly to turn a motor. The only scenario where extracting hydrogen from water approaches a viable degree of efficiency is when solar cells are used to provie the electricity needed to split the water molecules; and evn then the only gain is due to the lifespan of the solar cells. This process does nothing to improve efficiency, or reduce emissions, when used in an internal combustin engine. Furthermore adding hydrogen to an internal combustion that is not re-tuned to use the hydrogen is a dangerous proposition. Pistons can (and will) go flying.

That's right. Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. What we're doing here is, with minimal investment, converting our vehicles to use a sustainable energy source to fill part of the energy supply. Removing an internal combustion engine and replacing it with electric motors, while a romantic solution, is cost prohibitive.
What we need to understand is that our cars already run on hydrogen; we just get it in the form of the hydro-carbon gasoline. By adding this device we can produce our own hydrogen in a less expensive and more sustainable way.

It's also a net loss in terms of efficiency

Unfortunately, we still haven't found a way around those pesky laws of thermodynamics... No process is 100% efficient but this allows you to create your own fuel in a renewable and environmentally friendly way.

This process is less efficient than the internal combustion engine.

Think about it like this. Even gasoline (a hydro-carbon) requires energy to drill, refine and ship. With this unit, we are just getting our hydrogen from a more sustainable source.

Many people have tried introducing hydrogen and oxygen to their engines
and, you're correct, without making ECU or sensor adjustments adding
increased amounts of oxygen with the hydrogen can have varied results.
This unit however separates the gasses and produces pure hydrogen
eliminating the need for sensor or ECU adjustments.
This method is
similar to the system employed in Ford's tri-fuel Super Chief design,
BMW's Hydrogen 7 and others. Also check out the white papers at
