Hi, I usually did the same thing.

To stop/reduce flaring of the wick, I usually wound some cotton sewing thread a few loops around the top of the wick, tie it and snip off the ends. This seems to work pretty well whenever my Zippo would give me grief and I suspect it prolonged wick life greatly.

Buying new wick is cheap, but back in my cigarette smoking days I would only be able to get hold of a replacement wick slightly inferior to the factory installed one -has this changed?

I also cannibalized broken, disposable lighters for their flints, since these would usually last way longer than the ones sold by Ronson and Zippo.

a zippo is a brand of lighter.
