Introduction: "Presents" Christmas Staircase Decorations
To go with my PRESENTS Christmas theme this year, I came up with this decoration for my staircase. I love it and It will definitely make a statement with my other “present” decorations. Here's how to make it.
Step 1: Measure Your Staircase
Measure the length of your stairs, noting the length of the flat bottom presents you'll need and the length of the slopped bottom presents you'll need. For the slopped bottom presents you'll need to know what the bottom slop line is. To do this, tape a large piece of paper to the stair spindles and press it along the bottom to make a crease along the bottom slop.
Trim the paper along the crease and square up the right side if needed. This will be your template for cutting out cardboard “presents” going down the staircase.
Step 2: Cut Out Cardboard Presents
Using your template as a guide cut out various size presents from heavy
cardboard.
For
presents wider than your
template: Lay the
template on top of the cardboard piece you want to use, lining up the
bottom right corners. Lay a ruler along the bottom edge of the
template and draw the bottom line the length you want on the
cardboard. Sorry the picture is kinda blurry!
Step 3: Wrap the Presents and Hang
Once you have all your cardboard presents cut, simply wrap them as desired. I used red satin ribbon on all the presents to unify them.
To hang the flat bottom presents on the staircase I threaded fish line under the front ribbon and brought it around and tied it to the stair spindles.
To hang the slopped presents I used small hook Command adhesive strips (blue side down) on the bottom of the staircase, removed the black paper and pressed the present in place. I then tied them to the spindles with fish line. The Command strips keeps the presents from sliding down. I only used one Command strip for each present. NOTE: Test the Command strips first. My stairs are stained and finished so the strips come off with no problem.
I kept the top of the staircase simple by wrapping a prelite garland on the top rail, so as not to take away from the PRESENTS!

So cute! Simple but lots of impact.
I guess you could make 2 of each and sandwich them to make both sides finished.

I love the idea!
One thing I was wondering...
Will the back of the presents be a mess? When people actually climb the stairs they'll just see tape, glue, bare cardboard and string.
Any suggestions?

Make a pair of matching presents....1front and 1 back. Attach the back sides together with glue dots ,etc to the inside of Present 1, to the inside of matching.Present 2. I am sorry that I can't seem to say what I mean, maybe someone else can say it better.
