Introduction: Quick and Easy Apple Crumble
Warm, sweet and decadent, apple crumble is very easy to make and perfect as a holiday dessert for Thanksgiving or Christmas. It's very quick too; from prep to serving it takes about 25 minutes. This means it also works well in the warmer months, the minimal effort and short cook time making it suitable for a simple and satisfying addition to any BBQ or picnic.
You Will Need:
3-5 apples (any variety will do)
2 thumb-sized knobs of fresh ginger root
3 tbsp butter
3/4 c quick-cook oats
1/4 c white flour
1/2 - 3/4 c brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
2-3 tbsp lemon juice
This recipe will make four individual-sized ramekin dishes, two large pies or two ramekins and one pie. Besides the baking and serving dishes, you will need an apple peeler, a sharp paring knife, and a grater. Bake for 15-20 minutes at 375 Fahrenheit.
Step 1: Prep
You will need two bowls, one for the apple filling and the other for the crumble.
Start by combining the butter, oats and flour. Add in half the brown sugar, half the cinnamon and half the nutmeg. Use your hands to blend these ingredients thoroughly and then crumble the resultant mixture into smaller bits until you have a soft, almost granola-like product.
Next, peel your apples and cut them into chunks, then add a bit of lemon juice and mix together to keep them fresh. Add in the remaining halves of your brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Also grate and mix in your fresh ginger root.
Step 2: Bake
This recipe will make either four individual-sized ramekin dishes, two large pies or two ramekins and one pie.
You want each dish or pie plate to be at least 2/3 full with apples, maybe a little more. Then use your fingers to pinch and crumble the topping evenly over them. You want the topping layer to be thick enough to cover the apples completely, but still leaving a bit of space at the top for excess juices to boil and rise while cooking. This is especially important in the ramekins or when using individual-sized serving dishes to bake so that there will be room to add milk or ice-cream once they are ready to eat.
Bake your apple crumble at 375 Fahrenheit for 15-20 minutes with the rack in your oven one rung below the middle. You want the apples to cook until soft and the topping to get crispy. You can leave it in longer if you want a crunchier topping or take it out a little earlier if you want a softer, fluffier crumble.
Step 3: Serving
Apple crumble is best served warm, fresh out of the oven (although it is almost as delicious either re-heated or eaten cool). Add milk or vanilla ice cream to the final product for that comforting combination of creamy, crispy, sweet and spicy.
Enjoy - and Happy Turkey!
