ROY G. BIV-Styled Flower Shop Diorama

Instead of going to a flower shop for Mother's Day, why not just make her a flower shop?

Step 1: Supplies and Materials You'll Need - (Miscellaneous Listing)

SUPPLIES:

1. Green, blue, and yellow foam sheets

2. Violet (purple) cloth or foam sheet

3. Red construction paper

4. Indigo and orange crayons (or indigo and orange construction paper)

5. Blank paper (5 sheets)

6. Icy or cake blue paper

7. Green crayon

8. Blank cards

9. ROY G. BIV separate nail polish colors

10. Toothpicks (and I mean, LOTS)

11. Six or seven glass medicine bottles

12. Clay

13. Ambiance tea box

14. ROY G. BIV separate color beads

15. Big black or brown beads

16. Legos (Step will show you what kind)

17. Packing white foam

18. Striped cloth

19. Cellophane

20. Velcro

21. Green ribbon

22. Black permanent marker

23. Green and black adhesive ribbons

24. One golden thumbtack

25. One medium-sized cardboard box

MATERIALS:

1. Scissors (obviously)

2. Liquid Cement

3. Tape

4. Scissors for cloth

5. Knife

Step 2: Forming the Pots for the Flowers

So first, you grab your clay and roll a small sphere in your hands. Place it on a flat surface while you form it into a pot. Press on the sphere's surface until your fingers sink into it, and keep pressing on the bottom while pulling the sides up, smoothing them out until you have a messy but unique pot. Mine varied from sizes. You want to do this a day or two before you actually start the project because the drying process will take some time. Unless you have oven bake clay.

As soon as your pots are dry, paint them red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

(Blaah, I arranged two pots in reverse: yellow and orange.)

Step 3: The Flowers: Red

Take your red construction paper and cut a right angle, making it nice a long, about a few inches. Roll it up, starting with the small point as the center all around. Then take a piece of tape and tape the outside, gluing a toothpick to the inside. I made five of these, pouring glue to the bottom of the red pot and sticking them inside.

Step 4: The Flowers: Orange

Welp, these were a toughie.

Cut out two circles from the orange paper-cardboard and snip out little triangles all around the center for each, then draw a little orange center for one of the flowers, and glue the one with the orange center over the one without, and in order to glue it to the toothpick, use foam sheet scraps to hold the toothpick in place while the glue dries.

Step 5: The Flowers: Yellow

I cut out a circle from my yellow foam sheet then snipped out tiny triangles all around the center, and then sticking a toothpick right through, and gluing a black bead on top.

You're probably thinking, "Green flowers? That's fake! Flowers are every other color, but not GREEN!"

Well, that's not actually true. Thanks to ProFlowers.com, I found 18 types of green flowers and they're NOT fake!

I cut out a circle from my green foam sheet and cut around the sides in a wave motion, then stuck a toothpick straight through, placing a lump of packing foam. The kind that gets all over your...everything if you shred it.

Step 7: The Flowers: Blue

I took a blue foam sheet and cut out a circle, snipping off little triangles all around the center. Then I took a tiny circle of a yellow foam sheet, dotting it once with my permanent marker, then poking a toothpick right through both yellow and blue foam.

Step 8: The Flowers: Indigo

These took a lot of thought and brainstorming. But I finally got it.

I cut out little hearts from my indigo paper-cardboard and bent them halfway, taping one side, then the other, and finally a toothpick on one side.

Step 9: The Flowers: Violet (Purple)

These pretty little flowers were actually very easy to make. I cut out a circle of purple cloth, and took a toothpick, which I poked straight through the middle of the circle, then wrapped a strip of tape around both the toothpick and flower, kind of twisting the flower's bottom to make the outside seem wavy. I had to pull the outside a little to open up the flower.

Step 10: The Cash Register

I don't know the names of these pieces, so you'll have to look at the pictures for what types of Legos you should use. If you follow the alignment of the pieces, you should be able to see how the cash register was made in the photo, because I really don't know how to explain it.

Tip: Glue the grey piece to the green piece because it will fall off.

Step 11: The Tall Glass Flowers

I had six small, glass medicine containers on hand, so this wasn't very hard for me.

I got tired of making flowers and used premade ones for this. I actually did the math, and five flowers per pot, and there being seven pots, (5x7) I made 35 flowers! I have an excuse to be tired!

Stems: Take six toothpicks and color them green with your crayon. (Not hard at all!)

I didn't have yellow or blue flowers, but I did have white ones with their center missing, so I just took a blue and yellow bead and glued it to the flower.

Glue the stems to the flowers and fill the glass containers up to 1/3 with the right color beads, and then dip the stems' ends in glue, sticking them in the container. Let them dry.

Step 12: The Single Bouquet

What's a flower shop without at least one bouquet?

Take three toothpicks and color them with a green crayon.

I didn't make any more flowers since I made 35, I just took three premade ones.

Glue the stems to the flowers, and then wrap them in cellophane, tying them up with a green ribbon.

Step 13: The Counter

I used an Ambiance tea box for this, but you can find some other substitute if you don't want to buy a box of tea that you're never going to drink. (Our family drinks tea at least four times a week...no, we don't live in England)

Wrap the box in a plain, white sheet of paper, and decorate the outside however you please.

Step 14: The Shop's Window and Door

Gah, this one's a bit difficult...but it can be done! (It was no harder than the flowers, really)

I edited the photo to show you how I will make it. A large window on the left, & a door with a window on the right.

I first cut out the large window and then the door's window. Then I cut around the door, leaving one side for hinges. Then I placed it face down, on top of our cake-blue paper. I used a black permanent marker to trace around the inside of the windows. Then I cut the windows out of the paper.

Although I actually had to measure the door and trace it on the paper to cut it out. But that's okay.

I then glued the paper to the outside of the box, and tadah! Instant wallpaper!

I put in a little golden thumbtack as a doorknob, and it worked perfectly!

BTW, I cut the face of the box that had the windows and the door, out, leaving one side as hinges. That will allow more view of the inside.

Step 15: The Inside Wallpaper and Flooring

This shouldn't be a step. But, someone has to do it. *Sigh* Let's get to it, then!

There was a big gap between the two cardboard pieces on the bottom, and I didn't want the floor to lean inward, so I glued a scrap of cardboard there, then glued over a white sheet of paper as flooring. I made sure to glue white sheets of paper over every wall.

Step 16: The Window "Glass"

Heh, this part was fun.

I took the top of an organic spinach container and cut out the clear part, which was big enough for both windows.

Then I measured the windows' length and width, and then cut it out of the plastic.

I named the flower shop, "Four Roses Flower Shop" for some reason. But the painting and the cursive was pretty.

Step 17: The Window and Door's Awning

I kind of took this picture awhile after and didn't take it when barely made. You can see the "glass" for the door and window is already placed. The window I glued, using tape to hold it in place while the glue dried. The door's window I didn't even have to measure. I just cut out a rectangle of plastic and three strips of blue paper, and glued two short strips on the one long strip, over the plastic.

I took about six toothpicks for the window and four for the door. Although I suggest using a needle to poke through the cardboard first - since the cardboard itself might be too thick for the toothpicks.

Drizzle glue over the toothpicks and then cut a strip of striped cloth long enough to cover all the toothpicks. Then just place it over the toothpicks carefully. Same as with the door's awning.

...I am beginning to get annoyed with typing up "toothpick"...

Step 18: Gluing Everything in Place and Adding Final Touches

I glued the counter in one corner, the cash register on top, and the bouquet beside it. I glued the pots in the order of the rainbow, and the tall glasses also in the order of the rainbow. To make the walls a little less lonely and a little more friendly, I placed black and green adhesive ribbons on the tops. To help the front open and close more easily, I used velcro. And tadah! Four Roses Flower Shop was done.

And as for the answers to the flowers: Red - Rose, Orange - Gerbera Daisy, Yellow - Black-Eyed Susans, Green - Helleborus, Blue - Forget-Me-Nots, Indigo - Baptisia Australis, Violet - Common Morning Glory.
