Want to make a really cool bottle opener for your shop or bar? Here is what I did with an old railroad spike.
MATERIALS LIST:
1 - 6" Railroad spike
TOOLS REQUIRED:
Drill
3/16" & 5/16" metal drill bits
Hacksaw
Vise
Centre punch
Protractor
Hammer
Metal file
Felt marker
INSTRUCTIONS:
Take the railroad spike and place it in the vise on its side. Measure up from the pointed end of the spike, 2" and mark. Then measure up from the side of the spike 3/16" and mark the two intersecting lines. At the intersecting point, use the hammer and the punch to mark where you are going to drill. On this mark, drill the 5/16" hole.
Once this is done, measure up 1-1/4" from the tip and draw a line at 90 degrees. Using this line, take the protractor and mark a line at 20 degrees to the bottom side of the drilled hole. Take the hacksaw and cut up to the edge of the hole. If you don't have a protractor, use the mark at 1-1/4" and draw a line to the edge of the hole, this should be close enough to 20 degrees. Cut the little bit of metal left on the upper part of the hole at 20 degrees. Take the metal file and and smooth out the opening.
This part is optional, I drilled a 3/16" hole near the head of the spike so I could hang it on the wall. You can leave the spike raw or give it a quick spray paint and you are done.
Go crack a cold one and enjoy.
