Intro: Raspberry Pi Turn On/Off With Any Remote Control

Controlling power to the Raspberry Pi with an IR remote.

STEP 1: Requirements

  1. 1x Raspberry Pi
  2. 1x 5V power source (typically the wall adapter that comes with Raspberry Pi kits)
  3. 1x USB 2.0 to Micro B Cables
  4. 1x IRP1000 - Remote Control 1-CH 5V Relay USB Power Control Raspberry Pi
    Found here on Amazon: IRP1000
  5. 1x IR remote control

STEP 2: Setup

*Recommended to not have anything plugged in at output side during programming. When plugging 5V source to input side, 5V is active on output side.

  1. Plug 5V source to the wall outlet
  2. Plug the Micro USB end to the input side of IRP1000
  3. Press and hold the learning button
  4. Wait for the LED to flash 3 times
  5. Press any button on the remote control you wish to use
  6. Wait for the LED to flash 3 times
  7. Programming complete
  8. Plug the Micro USB cable into the Raspberry Pi and the other end to the output side of IRP1000

STEP 3: Usage

The power output to the Raspberry Pi is toggled on or off with a single button press on the remote used to program the IRP1000. If the red LED is on, then IRP1000 shuts off the 5V on the output side. If the red LED is off, then IRP1000 turns on the power on the output side.

Is there anywhere to still buy the IRP1000? Amazon is showing that it's unavailable and this would be the perfect solution to control my TV bias lighting from my Harmony remote, as my TV's USB power is always on.

Will this not damage the SD or the Pi itself? Since this is not a proper shutdown.

I'm thinking this setup would be more for turning the Pi on. For shutting the Pi down you'd need an ir receiver along with Lirc to preform the proper shutdown...So you'd have to use two different buttons...

In general, any power loss to a system has the potential of corrupting data.
I use the Pi to watch my media content, and I'm able to control the Pi with my remote control since it can receive commands from the TV through HDMI. I always do a proper shutdown. With this device I can turn the Pi back on without having to physically re-plug the power.

I just made my self a game console with a Raspberry Pi 3 and I need this. Not being able to turn it on without plugging it in has been bugging me.

I'm thinking of making a game console as well. I have the Logitech Harmony remote that I use to control this setup. Its nice to be able to press a button and have the Pi turn on. IRP1000 can be found on Amazon.

Very nice gadget, easy to use without soldering or screw connectors!

Thanks! Its nice to not having to physically re-plug the power to the Pi for it to turn on. I can just use a remote =)

Thats a neat setup :)
