My husband and I drink A LOT of mountain dew. I love finding new ways to recycle things, so I've been saving all of the empty 2-liter bottles for a while now and have been coming up with new and awesome ideas for things to do with them.

My favorite trait of the Mountain Dew bottle is it's signature green color. This makes it ideal for a number of geeky craft projects, especially around Halloween. When I noticed the similarity in shape and color between the mountain dew bottles and the plastic witch brooms popping up in the Halloween stores, an idea struck my face.

What You Will Need:
3 - 5 Empty 2-Liter Mountain Dew Bottles
Hot Glue Gun
Scissors or X-Acto Knife
A Stick
Masking Tape

Step 1: Making the Base of the Broom

First, take a Mtn Dew bottle and remove the label.

Then, cut off the bottom, making sure to leave to rest of the bottle as long as possible.

Fold the 2-liter in at the top where the curved top turns to the straight sides of bottle, as shown in the pictures.

Step 2: Cut It Up.

Cut slits in the Mtn dew bottle 1/4"-1/2" apart all the way around the bottle going all the way up to the crease

Step 3: Making Layers

Cut the label and bottom off of another 2-liter bottle.

About 1-2 inches from the lid, cut off the top of the bottle.

Repeat with at least one bottle, the more bottles you use the fuller your broom will be!

Step 4: Glue It Together

Layer your bottles with the cut-off tops on top of the bottle with the lid. Make sure all of the bottle flaps are straight and not creased between the layers.

Glue in place using a hot glue gun around the top.

Repeat as many times as needed for as many bottles as you want to use. I just used 3 bottles for this broom, but you can use more for a fuller broom!

Step 5: Add the Stick

What is a witch broom without a place to ride it?

Take a stick that looks "witchy" and can fit one end snugly inside the neck of the Mtn Dew (I found mine in my backyard, but a dowel rod that fits inside the neck of the bottle would work too.)

Put some hot glue on the end of the stick, shove it in and give it a good turn or two to spread the glue around.

Wrap the connection with masking tape to hide the obvious bottle-parts.

Step 6: Enjoy Your Witch Broom

Now you have an awesome piece of environmentally responsible Halloween decor!

Hang it on your wall or above your door, keep it on your porch for a spooky prop, or use it to add pop to any witch costume.

this a cool activity i wish came on her so i could do that i am only 10 i m alisa campbell my is tiffany campbell and i was a witch this halloween so should have came on here and try to make it

What if you would insert a bright LED light on the base of the broom? If the light is bright enough, it could produce an eerie glow to the bristles... Or would the plastic strips be too opaque for that?

This is soooo clever and so very effective! I love the color and the contrast between the plastic and the rough wood handle is brilliant! My daughter wants to be a witch this year, so I may have to track down some bottles...thanks for sharing your great idea!
