Intro: Red Barron 3D Print With Hot Glue

Since the 3D printer first came out I have always wanted one but i haven't decided to buy one because of expense.

But, I have found a way around this barrier. The way i have discovered uses the hot glue gun.

hope you like it.

STEP 1: What You Will Need

  • A hot glue gun
  • glue for the hot glue gun
  • Knife
  • Red paint
  • Black paint
  • White paint
  • clean working surface
  • paintbrush

STEP 2: Wings

dimensions

length:4"

width: 1/2"

How to make

To make the wings you must first heat up the hot glue gun

Glue a line 4" long and repeat this several time until the wing is 1/2" wide (I will refer to this as rows)

Make 3 wings because this is a triplane.

STEP 3: Body

Dimensions

Length: 3 1/2"

Width: 1"

Height: 3/4"

IMPORTANT: to make the cockpit don't put glue in the space

How to make

To try to make the body a oval shape you must use less rows of hot glue at the bottom say 2 and make your way up by putting more rows in the gaps of the first few rows.

When you are about three rows up you must continue at the front and back with the same technique but in reverse so you are shrinking the width.

In the middle leave a gap of about 1" for the cockpit.

When the rows are set at the top place rows at the edge of the cockpit leaving a rectangle of roughly 1" long 1/2" wide and 1/4" deep.

STEP 4: Tail Fins

Dimensions

Tail Flaps (Second Image)

Diameter of: 3/4"

Tail Fin (First Image)

Diameter of: 1"

How to make

Tail Flaps

To make these make the hot glue set in a spiral fashion to end up with a nice circular shape with a diameter of roughly 3/4".

Cut a flat zone into the side of each flap so it will make it easier to glue later on.

Tail Fin

To make this use exactly the same method as the flaps including the cut but just a bit bigger.

STEP 5: Preparing the Body

Choose one end of the body and cut two sides and the top of that end on a slight angle so you can glue the tail fins on later.

STEP 6: Painting

OK time to paint, Use a red colour to paint everything excluding the tail fin.

The tail fin is the only part to be painted white.

Paint the cockpit either black or grey, I chose to paint it grey.

Also in the gabs between the wings grey or black to resemble bullet holes.

STEP 7: Put It Together

For this nest step you must glue the tail fin, tail flaps and body together.

Use the flat zones you made earlier to glue the pieces together.

STEP 8: Wing Supports

Dimensions

Width: 1/4"

Depth: 1/4"

Height: 3/4"

How to make

This is just a single row of hot glue cut to 3/4"

So you could simply do a single row 3" long and cut to size or 4 separate rows 3/4" long it is totally up to you.

STEP 9: Putting the Wings Together

To glue the wings on you place one wing on the bottom of the body and glue it in the middle of the wing at the front of the plane.

The second wing goes on top of the body, when this is glued on glue the wing supports about 1/4" from the end of the wings.

The third and final wing is glued on by the wing supports i found it easier to glue the wing supports to the third wing first then to the rest of the plane.

STEP 10: Propeller

Dimensions

length: 1 1/4"

Width: 1/8"

Depth: 1/8"

How to make

This is just a very thin row of hot glue, so it is pretty straight forward.

STEP 11: Machine Guns

Dimensions

Body of the gun

Length: 3/4"

Width: 1/4"

Height:1/8"

Barrel

Length: 1/4"

Width: As thin as necessary

Height: As thin as necessary

How to make

To make the Barrel it is a very thin row of hot glue cut to length

The body is just a normal sized row of hot glue

To glue the two pieces together place the barrel to the front of the body and glue it in this position

Paint it Black

STEP 12: Wheels

Dimensions

Diameter of: 1/2"

How to make

To make these it is exactly the same as the tail flaps or fin.

Except these are painted white and around the edge I have painted black with a permanent marker.

If you want to have a rear wheel you must turn the plane over and at the rear put a dab of hot glue, and the dab is painted black

STEP 13: Wheel Support

Dimensions

Length: 1"

Width:1/8"

Height:1/8"

How to make

The Wheel supports main purpose is to keep the wheels straight so they don't fall off or break

So this is made just like the propeller but painted black

glue this to the inside of the wheels and glue the wheels to the bottom of the bottom wing.

STEP 14: The Cross

To add some decoration to the plane you can paint some crosses on the wings and tail fin

To paint the crosses on the wings you paint a white cross and then use a permanent marker to paint the black cross inside.

STEP 15: Finishing Touches

in all the places where you have not painted the hot glue paint them now.

STEP 16: Hope You Enjoyed

If you do decide to make this please put an image in the comment section. Thank you

Really nice Red Barron! You could use some toothpicks or matchsticks as a frame for the hotglue...plus it'll add more rigidity!I fixed one of the wing on my tiny biplane this way.

yeah that would work it would be heaps stronger as well

It kind of looks like a 3D version of a kids drawing. Interesting. One thing that makes it difficult I think, is that glue guns work in bursts so its hard to get a nice even flow. Maybe you could design a hot glue gun that has a constant steady flow out of the nozzle. Motorized maybe? When you pull the trigger, a motor pushes the glue at a steady speed.

yeah that should work,

i will think of designing one

It might be a good idea to make some sort of mould and squeeze the hot glue into the mould so you can get better detail. It wouldn't be too difficult for flat stuff and you could make your moulds out of anything from coke cans and duct tape to clay and sugru.

I am not sure if that will work because the hot glue sets so quick you may only end up with part of the plane.

But thank you for some other way to do it

I have to agree... Those are very impressive results from free-hand with a hot glue gun however!

Such a cute plan, and it's so awesome that you created using tools that are easily attainable!
