Intro: Redcat Racing Sumo With Lipo Batteries

This is a little upgrade made to a stock 1/24 Scale Redcat Racing Sumo work on 7.4 V. Lipo Batteries. Hope you find this useful :)

Sumo Lipo Conversion

The Sumo runs on 4 AA batteries which equals 6V DC, we are going to convert the Sumo to be able to use a 7.4V Lipo battery without adversely affecting the stock receiver/speed controller.

Step 1:

Unscrew the battery compartments on both sides of the chassis – each holder is fastened using 2 screws.

Step 2:

Cut all wires close to the battery holders, you will notice one wire ties the battery holders together between the two sides, this can be removed completely.

Step 3:

Schoetke Diodes create a 0.7V voltage drop across each diode, in order to reduce 7.4V to 6V we will need to solder 2 Schoetke diodes in Series to create a 1.4V drop.  Since the Sumo Draws more current than a single set diode can handle safely, we will be soldering 3 sets of 2 diodes in parallel, the positive input will connect to all 3 sets at the input side and the output will come off all 3 sets at the output side, this allows the current to spread out through 3 individual sets of 2 diodes. You can use more than 3 sets but for the standard motor, 3 seems adequate.

Will this modification work on other RC brands, or just those that you sell?
I am not familiar with this modification in any other brand, but this should be able to be done to different models that share the same general features :)
