Intro: Regrow Your Spring Onions

It's very easy to regrow spring onions (green onions) from their basal parts.  This simple experiment shows the importance of the length of the basal part cut off for a swift regrowth.  It is recommended to start with basal parts having a greenish top.

How to plant the basal part of spring onion in an empty container? Please help! Asap!

I usually regrow old onions (they look like these: http://it.dreamstime.com/fotografie-stock-cipolla-...

and I get fresh spring onions

i was wondering this exact thing. thank you.

This instructable inspired me to give this a try. I'm also trying to do this with a celery base cut from supermarket celery. Right now I'm trying to root it in a bottle base. To encourage root development, I've added half of a single multivitamin, powdered by a coffee grinder, into the water to add vital nutrients. I added the other half to the potting soil for the green onions for added nutrients. I'm not sure if it will make a difference, but I believe it couldn't hurt. If you want, I'll let you know how the celery turns out.
After 24 hours, the four plants have experienced an average of 8mm of regrowth (9mm, 9mm, 7mm & 7mm respectively). The only departures from the method given in the video was the cuttings made of 65mm (2.5") and the addition of a single multivitamin to the watering container and powdered into the soil.
The multivitamin added to the celery water turned the water a shade of red (likely due to the iron content). Water was exchanged with fresh (no vitamin added) and the celery base washed. Already, regrowth of about 0.5mm (1/32") can be seen in the innermost parts with no regrowth visible in the outer leaves.
Hopefully, these findings are of some help.
Dear Hoopajoo, Sincere thanks for your efforts to give us a growing insight and for your detailed report. Maybe a comparative test for the influence of the added multivitamin would have been instructive : one set of plants with and one without the multivitamin. Let us continue the testing.
I've been doing this for so long.
