Introduction: Removable Skirt Lampshade Covering
Do you need a way to help cut down on the dust in your apartment? Or are you tired of looking at that old lampshade? If so, then you might want to make your own Removable Skirt Lampshade Covering. A removable lamp shade covering will allow you to easily wash it before it accumulates dust. This instructable tells you how to take an old skirt and upcycle it to cover an old lampshade.
For this project you will need the following consumable materials: an old lampshade, an old skirt with a zipper, and thread.
To create the project you will need: pins, scissors, chalk, a measuring tape, and a sewing machine.
I think that this is an innovate product because you can extend the life of two objects and you can help keep some of the dust from accumulating in your home. I was motivated to do this project when I was doing some spring cleaning. I believe in reusing things as a way of being conscious about how I treat our environment. I also like the idea that objects have a life of their own. I still remember many of the outfits my mom sewed for me many years ago. As a matter of fact my user name jessiecreations was chosen for her. Her name was Jessie. She taught me to sew and it is a gift I will always treasure.

Step 1: Clean Your Old Lampshade
Find an old lampshade that you would like to recover. Make sure you dust it well. You may also choose to remove the fabric covering if you like and just use the wire frame.
Step 2: Determine If You Need to Trim the Skirt
Your skirt may be longer than your lampshade. If so you will need to trim it.
Step 3: Pin Skirt to the Desired Length
If you have determined that your skirt is too long for the lampshade, you will need to trim it to the desired length. The easiest way to do this it to place the skirt over the lampshade and then place the lampshade on the lamp. This way you can determine just how short to make the covering. For my lampshade I found the bottom of the lampshade and then I place a pin one inch below this mark. Take the skirt off the lampshade. Now, using a ruler mark the desired hem around the entire bottom of the skirt. Use pins to keep the fabric in place.
Step 4: Cut Skirt to Desired Length
Cut skirt along the lines that you have marked. I find it best to use good sewing scissors when I sew. It makes the job so much easier.
Step 5: Sew the Hem
Now it is time to sew the hem. Make sure not to sew over the pins. Sewing over pins may break your needle. When sewing the hem, it is best to use a matching color thread if you do not want to notice the seam. If you are adding a different look you may want to use a contrasting thread.
Step 6: Zip Off to Clean
When you are ready to clean your lampshade cover - just zip off and slip off. Throw it in the washer and you are good to go. Be sure not to shrink it when drying. When done slip it back on and you have a dust-free, clean, beautiful lampshade. Have fun designing your own. - DIY - the best way to get the look that you want.
