Repaint a PS2 Controller

Ah, the Playstation 2, the first console I had as a child. The Playstation 2 holds the title as the best selling video game console of all time, deserving that title as it holds many classics from Ratchet and Clank to Grand Theft Auto. Released on March 4, 2000, the Playstation 2 lives joyfully in many gamer's hearts, for it was a great system and brought lots of fun.

Step 1: Getting the Controller

I own one official Sony Platstation 2 controller, and I own two other knock-off controllers. I never really needed more than one good controller, as the two knock-offs came from clearance purchases that I probably should have returned. The controller I am going to repaint is a Mad Catz, a Chinese company for video game accessories.

Step 2: Disassemble the Controller

The first real step of this project is to take apart the controller. The screws on the back of my controller were Philips screws, making the whole process easier by about two minutes. With the screws off the back, I pulled the two halves apart to reveal two shells, I motherboard, and the cable connected to the motherboard. All the keys popped off, so make sure to put them and the screws in a container so you don't lose them.

Step 3: Putting on the Paint

With a cool artic style blue already on the controller, I decided to paint only the back of the controller. The back showed two eyesore stickers on it, so it deserved to get a new coat of paint. For the paint, I used a cream white krylon spray paint made for plastics. The blue and white looks really good on the controller, matching the d-pad that I also painted white to match the back shell.

Step 4: Reassemble the Controller

When reassembly came, it was a bitter sweet moment as this was the first controller that I even attempted to change in any way. The most angering part of this step was making everything fit and work properly, often I had to plug in the controller and test out each button on Ratchet and Clank to make sure they worker properly. With all the buttons in place, I put all the screws in the back and was left with a sweet new painted controller to use on my PS2.
