This instructable describes how to replace a broken door switch on a Kenmore Gas Dryer. My particular Gas Dryer is a Kenmore 80 Series Model 110.72822101, but these instructions can apply to many clothes dryers (including some Whirlpool models).

Step 1: Identifying the Issue

How do you know if your dryer door switch is broken?

If the light will not come on when you open the dryer door, it could be the light is burned out. If, however, the dryer will not stop when you open the door and the light will not come on, it is probably a broken door switch.

Step 2: Parts

Dryer Door Switch (P.N. 3406107)

You can order this part directly from Sears (https://www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/3406107/0026/110.html) or you can buy a third-party replacement (which is what I did) and save a few bucks.

Step 3: Tools

Philips Screw Driver
Flat Head Screw Driver (or something similar)

Step 4: Safety First

Unplug the Dryer
Turn off the Gas (if applicable)

Step 5: Remove Screws Under Lint Filter

Remove the lint filter and unscrew the two Philips screws located underneath the filter.

Step 6: Remove the Top of the Dryer

Take a flat headed screwdriver (or similar device) and insert it between the top and the body of the dryer around 3-6 inches away from the edge. Gently separate the top from the body (this may take a little force). Do the same on the other side.

The top should lift up.

Step 7: Note Orientation of Broken Switch

If you look down into the dryer, you should see the door switch. Make note of the orientation of the switch. You will want to install the replacement switch in the direction the old switch was facing.

Step 8: Removing the Broken Switch

If you open the dryer door and look up, you should see the door switch and the two Philips screws that hold it in.

Remove these screws.

You should be able to lift the door switch up from the dryer frame.

Step 9: Plug in New Switch

Unplug the old, broken switch and plug in the new switch.

Step 10: Install New Switch

Insert the new switch into the frame from the top of the dryer.

Replace the two screws that hold the switch in place.

Step 11: Close and Secure the Top of the Dryer

Close the top of the dryer. It should snap into place.

Replace the two screws that were under the lint filter.

Step 12: Test It Out

Plug the dryer back in and turn the gas back on (if applicable).

Test it out. With any luck your light should be on when you open the dryer door and the dryer should automatically turn off if you open the door when it is running.
