Rhinestone Headband

I love sparkly things!  I particularly love Rhinestone Necklaces.  After a flop in trying to solder Rhinestone Jewelry (I haven't given up!) I decided to make a Rhinestone Headband!

*Warning:  When you take this off, you will pull out some hair.  I will take any suggestions on how to prevent the rhinestone setting prongs from catching on your hair.

Step 1: What You Need

Tools:

• Cutter (something that can cut through the rhinestone chain)
• Glue (I just used a Super Glue I had, feel free to use what you feel comfortable using)
• Tape
• Toothpick
• Clothespins
• Piece of scrap paper

Supplies:

• Rhinestone Chain (I bought mine at a Beading Store, but you can find it anywhere online)
• Headband (I just used one I got in a 2 pack at Michaels)

Step 2: Measuring

First you need to decide how long of a chain you need.  Now you can go tip to tip with the chain, but I thought I'd save on some chain (it can get expensive) and try to avoid it scratching behind my ears.

Take a little piece of tape and put on your headband.  Once it is on, put the piece of tape on the headband about where the top of your ear is.  See images to help.

You can do this for both sides, or do one side and then just measure the other side.  Either way, try to keep it even!

How are you going to string the rhinestone?

I am referencing the last two images.  Those who have worked with or played with Rhinestone chain now it compresses.  Before you measure your chain, you need to decide how you want the chain on the headband.  I went with the obvious stretched out way, but you can also compress it.  You can do it that way if you want, but you will use more chain.  Either way, make sure you measure out enough chain before cutting!

Once you know the length you need to cut the rhinestone.  I used a clothespin to hold the chain on the headband where I wanted it to start, by the tape, and then just held it around the edge to get the measurement and cut where the chain met the other piece of tape.

When you have the length, use your cutter to cut between the stones, you can't cut on them.  Mine worked out pretty perfectly, but adjust the tape as need be for it to fit right.

Mine ended up being about 12 inches.

Step 3: Gluing

Time to put on the chain!

Here is what I did.  I took the glue, a piece of paper, and a toothpick.  Put some glue on the paper and use the toothpick to dab a little right above the tap.  Stick on the end rhinestone.  Hold that on with a clothespin.  Now add more and more glue (you aren't going to need a ton, so don't glob it on, just spread it on), sticking the rhinestone chain on as you go.  Go until you reach the end. 

Be careful not to glue the tape!

It should stay, but feel free to use more clothespins to hold it in place.  Don't glue the clothespins to the headband!

Let it dry completely.

While it was drying, I carefully scraped off any excess glue.

Step 4: Wear It and Be Sparkly!

Time to wear it and be sparkly!  Careful about your hair!  Try to not get your hair all over it or you'll pull out more :P

As you can see in one of the images, you can see where the rhinestone ends right below the top of my ear, that is what you get if you measure first.  I think it worked out nicely.

I made a similar headband to prevent snags I used a strip of polymer clay(black) and then pressed my stones into the headband so that the prongs were set flush into the clay hope that helps

To try and prevent snagging you may try glossy fingernail top coat or polyurethane.

Possible dumb question...the glue/adhesive bends with the band? I know sometimes rhinestones or whatever is glued is stationary and not really bendable. Just wondering. I love these!

Sorry for the long delay! Yes it seems to bend just fine. Also, the links between the rhinestones contract so you can bend the headband since it has give there too.

Using flat back crystals would more than likely keep from hair pulling better, no prongs needed. I use flat backs A LOT, it may take a little more time but I think it would look better as well
