In past times there were many types of armor. Plate, chainmail, etc.. And one of them was ring armour. It basically consisted of some padded base and metal rings attached to it.
And I will show you, how to make ring armor gauntlets!:)

Step 1: Tools and Materials

  • Wool cloth
  • Linen cloth
  • Washers
  • Thread and needle
  • Leather
  • Vinegar and oil (optional)

Step 2: Sketching Time!

Take a piece of paper and draw down your hand. Then make two templates from it. One for the inner side and one for the outer. The basic shape is just an oval, but inner part has the thumb part drawn inside it and outer part has it drawn outside. I'm not sure if I wrote this clear but try to look at the photos and you'll figure it out!;)

Step 3: Blackening

So...I wanted to give my rings a little authentic look. There are many ways how to do it. You can put them into a vinegar for about a day, so the anti corrosive layer would disappear from washers. Then hit them with a hammer as a fake blacksmithing visage.
I just heated them and put them into a jar of oil. This will cause blackening. It makes a thin black film of burned oil which protects the rings from rust.
But if you like them silver, you can skip this step. :-)

Step 4: Sewing Time!

Now it's finally time to sew everything together. First attach the rings on the woolen part. After that sew linen part and woolen part together. This might be a little tricky. You need to bend the thumb part of the linen part and then "wrap" it with woolen part and sew it. This will cause that the final product will look like more like a glove than a potholder.

On the end you can also sew a wristband from leather. But I haven't because I wear leather bracers over them.

Note: I had just a few washers, so I sewed them only at the parts, which weren't protected by bracers. I also replaced some washers with leather pieces.

Step 5: Finish!

If you got all the way down here it means you are done!

Now you are prepared for battle without hurting your fingers.
