Introduction: Roof for Ikea Kura Reversible Bed
Do you want to make a nice "house" bed for your kid ?
You can easily hack the Ikea Kura Reversible Bed to look like these pictures.
Step 1: What Will You Need ?
- Obviously the Ikea Kura bed ( https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80253814/ )
- Six pieces of wood : They should be 44mm * 44mm * 240cm
Choose them as straight as possible! - A way to curt the wood at 45° (either using an electric miter saw or a miter box, see pictures)
- A sander with grit of 60 and 120
- Paint (optional)
If you do want to paint, I recommend using water based paint to avoid fumes in kids room) - A driller with :
- A 2mm ⌀ drill (with a length of 5 cm or more)
- A chamfer mill
- At least 12 Wood screws 4.5 / 60mm (You may need more depending on how you will fix it to the bed)
Step 2: Cut, Sand and Paint the Wood
Cut
All the sizes and angles are described in the picture.
You need to cut 3 out of the 6 pieces to a length of 2 meter.
Then you have to cut the rest to make the 2 triangles as described in the picture.
Sand
When you have all pieces, sand them carefully.
First use the 60 grit sandpaper and remove all imperfections,
Then use the 120 grit sandpaper to make the wood as soft as silk.
Paint
If you decided to paint it, this is the right moment !
Step 3: Assemble the Triangles
You need to work on a perfectly flat surface.
- Put the longest piece (the only one with straight cuts) close to you
- Then take the longest triangle side and put it at the right spot
- firmly maintain them in place while you :
- use the driller to make a pre-hole (that avoid damaging the wood when you will screw the pieces)
The hole should start from the longest piece end end up in the longest side
It should be done at more or less 2.2 cm from the edges - use the chamfer mill to make a slightly larger hole.
It should be as large as the head of the screws : this way the head of the screw will not damage the wood when you will screw. Screw the 2 pieces together.
Make sure the screw's head is perfectly aligned with the edge of the wood
- use the driller to make a pre-hole (that avoid damaging the wood when you will screw the pieces)
Now put the short side of the triangle in place
Proceed the same way as before.
The final step is screwing the top of the triangle.
Again, you will have to make a pre-hole as well as using the chamfer mill.
For this one, make sure you do it at 3 cm from the edge. Otherwise you won't be able to fix the long piece of wood on top of the roof.
Repeat 2 times...
Step 4: Assemble the 2 Triangles and the Long Side Wood
One of the three 2 meters pieces will be connected to the triangles.
- Put the 2 triangles on the ground facing each other.
They have to be standing up, with the longest side on the ground (I mean : the longest side with a 45 degree cut) - Position the 2 meter piece at the right angle of each triangle
- Maintain firmly and use the same steps as before:
use the driller to make a pre-hole (that avoid damaging the wood when you screw the pieces)
Note: Be careful not to cross the path of the previous screw!use the chamfer mill to make a slightly larger hole.
It should be as large as the head of the screws: this way the head of the screw will not damage the wood when you will screw it.Screw the 2 pieces together.
Make sure the screw's head is perfectly aligned with the edge of the wood
Repeat this for both triangles
Step 5: Put It on the Bed
With the help of someone, put the 2 connected triangles on top of the bed,
Then position the two other 2 meters pieces.
Make sure everything is aligned perfectly and screw the roof to the bed.
Here again, make a pre-hole, use the chamfer mill and screw until the edge of the wood.
Step 6: You Are Done
