Introduction: SCOOPY - Accessible Scoop for Grabbing Pet Food

As part of our studies at HIT in Industrial Design department, We, Raz Malka & Elad Achi took a part on "Fixperts" project which connects between makers and people with disabilities.

We met Netanel a 31 years old, who is a social activist for people with disabilities.

Netanel was born with muscular dystrophy. Therefore, he is unable to walk and relies on a wheelchair.

Due to his muscular dystrophy, he is unable to bend down and reach the bottom of his dog food container.

Therefore, we have made SCOOPY especially for him.

A long spoon which allows Netanel to grab Dyson's food from the bottom of the box.

Supplies

MATERIALS:

1) 3D printed scoop

2) 3D printed hook

3) 3D printed stopper pin

4)Sponge handle grip

5)6m x 30mm Allen bolt

6)6m hex nut

7) Rivet 3mm

8) ** Metal rod 3mm DIA | 1000mm length

9)Aluminum tube 19mm DIA | 500mm length

10) Plain wood 450mm x 250mm x 30mm (or more)

TOOLS:

1) Top hand jigsaw

2) Hand drill

3) 6mm drill bit | 3mm drill bit

4) Hex key 6 mm

5)Rivet gun

6) "Super 7" glue

7)Measure tape

**Optional for metal tray holder for a small storage box

for this option you will also need a spot welding machine and a manual bar bender.

Step 1: Print the Plastic Parts

Download here the 3D print files and set the setting on the slicer as you see below.

Print Settings scoop:

Filament material: ABS

Supports: Yes - 45° or more

Infill: 15% or more

Resolution: 0.3 or lower

Rafts: Doesn't Matter

Wall thickness: 5

Print Settings stoper and hook:

Filament material: ABS

Supports: No

Infill: 15% or more

Resolution: 0.3 or lower

Rafts: Doesn't Matter

Wall thickness: 4

*Note: After printing is over, remove all supports.

On the stopper and hook print - you have to glue together parts D,E,F.

parts B,C are the pins you attach if you choose to make the Metal Tray Holder

file "pkak27" - is fit to a sponge with 27mm DIA

file "pkak32" - is fit to a sponge with 32mm DIA

*Note: It is recommended to print with ABS filament for maximum strength.

Step 2: Making the Wood Pattern for Bending

1) Download the PDF File of the pattern which you are going to bend the aluminum tube on.

2) Print it and then paste or manually draw on the plain wood.

3) Using the top hand jigsaw or any other tool, and cut the wood by the pattern you apply.

Step 3: Bend the Aluminum Tube Against the Wooden Pattern

1) Attach the wood pattern to a work table using two clamps, place the tube between the pattern and another piece of wood (also attached to the table using two clamps) so that it supports the starting point of bending and prevents the tube from escaping to the sides.

2) After the tube is secure, bend it along the bending pattern as you can see the picture above.

3) Then cut the rest of the tube to the desired length according the size of the storage box

Step 4: Measure and Mark the Hole to Drill

First mark:

you mark the drill point 1 cm above the end of the straight part of the tube, this point will connect next to the scoop.

Second mark:

insert the hook and the sponge handle grip and close it by the stopper pin throw the tube and then mark the point inside the hole you see on the hook, then remove all parts from the tube.

*Note: you can cut the sponge handle grip at any desire length.

Step 5: Drill the 2 Holes You Have Marked

1) Take the aluminum tube and drill 6mm hole on bottom, Note that the drill you have made has two parallel outlet holes

2) Then drill a 3 mm hole on the middle point with one outlet hole

*Notice you can use a hand drill or a drill press as you can see on the photo for maximum accurate

Step 6: Applying Glue

1) Applying Glue on the aluminum tube, the stopper pin and the hook.

2) Then, insert the hook and the sponge handle grip back and close it all using the stopper pin.

*Note: After this step you may need to wipe off some of the glue that has leaked out, also make sure the hole of the tube and the hook are concentric.

*Wait at least 24 hours to dry.*

Step 7: Attach the Hook

After making sure that the two holes are centered, attach the hook with the Revit and Revit gun.

*Note that you put the Revit into the 3 mm hole and then press it by the gun.

Step 8: Attach the Scoop to the Handle

Insert the tube into the hole in the scoop and connect using the bolt and nut and secure using the hex key

Step 9: Optional - Metal Tray Holder for a Small Storage Box

This step is optional only if you wish to add a metal tray holder for a smaller storage box as Netanel Using.

Step 10: Bending the 3mm Rod

Using a manual bar bender, bend the two rods according to the steps shown above.

Step 11: Welding the Parts

Weld the two parts at two connection points

*In the picture - welding using a spot welding machine

Step 12: Drill Two Exit Holes in the Bucket

Using the 6mm drill bit, drill two holes from top to bottom of the bucket spacer.

Step 13: FINISH
