Intro: SKR2 Sonic's Knex Rifle 2

Hello everybody, I have been working on lots of different Knex projects, but this is my latest gun. It has some improvements over my first Knex rifle like a removable mag, EZ pull trigger, and a rail to guide the firing pin. Just so you know this is my first Knex gun with a removable mag so do not expect an amazing gun. After tinkering with the magazine for hours I decided to use a bendy rod to push the ammo,.because it seemed to work the best.

The main reason I'm posting this is to have your ideas and feedback, so please comment and subscribe.

First note, this it a work in progress and I may post updated pictures as things come along. The main problem with this gun is that the ammo locks up in the mag and reduces the range to a sad 15 feet under good conditions. I know about bolt action and all tha,t but I'm looking for other solutions to fix this problem. If you have any ideas on how I can stop the mag from locking up please post your advice in the comments.

I'm happy with the looks of this gun and all other aspects except for the mag and the range. It will be improved as I learn and build more with Knex.

First here are the PROS and CONS

PROS

looks good IMO

Nice and sturdy

comfortable

Nice trigger

Rail to guide firing pin

top attachment rail for sights

removable magazine

Nice mag lock

CONS

Bad range - I will improve this as this projects comes along

Uses 3 cut parts

Please do not criticize me about the range, this is my first gun with a removable magazine. If you have any tips or ideas on how I can improve range with out changing ammo type please comment with your ideas!

Thanks for checking out my instructable. Please comment, like, and subscribe

Thanks! No it is not bolt action.

You are welcome! Oh yeah, I see now that it is a simple pin gun. You pull back on the two dark grey gears to load the gun, right?

Well your appearance is definitely not an issue, I love how a grip and turned out. The appearance is balanced because in my eyes you have the right amount of flat surfaces to rounded edges and it balances the overall appearance of the gun ( Not to boxy vs not a gun shape, although that's amusing too).

As far as the performance goes, I agree with The Jamalam (haven't seen him in awhile). I think the main cause of reduced range is all the friction on your pin and pin guide. When trying another gun try reducing the amount of contact with the pin wherever possible without sacrificing the pin's stability when it's primed. For pin guides I tend to base my design off of the TR-8's design just because it's the best I've tried. Making your own is fine too, again try to limit the contact with other parts of the gun, the TR-8's pin guide for example only has the gray connector as a contact point.

Also congrats on your first removable magazine! My challenge to you is one that I've set for myself, always improve upon you past design. After you achieve something you haven't done before, make it a requirement for all the next guns. That's how I got better at my gun designs. Example being Zip had no magazines and little power potential. Zip2 had more power potential but no removable magazines. Zip3 had more power potential than Zip2 and removable magazines.

Overall awesome job!

Thanks! i have taken this apart and i will keep all of those things in mind with my next gun. Do you have any guns in the works or other knex projects? the contest is coming up so i'm working on some projects for that.

The contest is coming up already?!

Well I'm not working on anything at the moment, and I'm not as ready for this contest as last year (since I had already decided what I would be building the year before). I've been in an innovative stuck point lately, just building things, getting another idea, taking it apart to build that, and repeated a couple times. Ideas just arn't sticking. I'm half tempted to make a simple pin, just for the sake of posting something. We'll see where I go from there.

Build a simple pin. Give it a preloaded mag and make sure it shoots well and looks good.

Seems easy anyway..... I just hold myself to high expectations when I post, and I'm sure my subscribers have just as high expectations.

I have high expectations for you too, but simple pin guns are great, and I love the look of the gun you build. Just build a clean and good looking gun, and everyone will be happy with it. :)

That is the just like how i'm building right now i start to build something and then a get a new idea and tear it apart to start on the new idea i just can't seem to finish anything!

I think I have an partial solution to your range problem - it looks like the firing pin is somewhat restricted in its path, given those grey connectors seem to be squeezed between the yellows. Combined with the seemingly weak rubber band power you've got on it, this will greatly reduce the impulse delivered by the pin. Also the wheels you have attached to the other end of the bands don't seem to do much - they work better when placed in the middle of a rubber band rather than at its end, as they efficiently increase the degree of extension of the bands when draw length is restricted.

Improving the power of the gun may help to reduce the lockup in the magazine, but measures can still be taken to improve this. For example, is the top rail of the magazine perfectly in line with the rest of the mechanism? Is there a lot of tension pushing the rounds up together? Is the magazine rigid within the body or does it shake when the pin is fired? There are other factors to consider but you'll want to fix issues like these in order to improve the function of the weapon.

Thanks! I have taken this apart but i will keep those things in mind for my future guns.

What do you want me to call it? i'm sorry for giving it a wrong name. by the way your ball machine looks pretty cool!

It has a mag release. and it is not a friction lock it uses a rubber band to lock the mag in place.

Thanks! It has a mag lock like I stated in the instructable.

I like this.

Thanks! Do you have Any ideas for my next project?
