Introduction: Saw Blade From an Old CD Drive

This is a short instructable on how to make a saw blade for a 12 Volt drill. The blade itself is made from metallic casing of an old CD/DVD Drive.

Step 1: Things You Need

Old CD/DVD Drive

Scissors

Metal File

12V drill

A screw with nut

Step 2: Cut the Basic Shape

Cut the metallic casing of the CD drive into a circle. You can do this with scissors in 2 steps. It is a bit hard to cut with scissors but not impossible. Make sure to have protection on hands and face as sharp metallic objects can cause injuries.

Step 3: Punch a Hole

Now make a hole in the center of the disc so the screw can pass through. Just make it big enough so the screw can pass, not any more than that. I used a metallic tool and hammered into the disc on a wooden surface to make the hole, you can use a drill too.

Step 4: Assemble the Disc

Put in the screw and make an assembly ready for your drill. The screw you choose must fit inside one of the drill sleeves tightly. Tighten the nut to make sure the disc is secure.

Step 5: Smooth the Edges on the Drill

Set the disc on the drill and turn it on. The disc would be rough at the edges, so put a file against the rotating edge and make smooth. This should help keep the symmetry and balance of the disc.

Step 6: Make Teeth

Now you have to make the saw teeth. Use the edge of a file to do this. Takes some time to do all of them but it's worth it if you're on a budget.

Step 7: Start Cutting

Yes, it's done. You have just made a saw blade yourselves. Just spin it on the drill sand with a sandpaper to smooth the rough edges after marking the saw teeth.

This blade on a 12V drill can cut sheets of plastic and thin wood (pencils too) easily and precisely. If it wears out, make new saw teeth with a file using the same procedure as in previous step.

Wear proper necessary protection, at least eyeglasses and gloves while operating.
