Introduction: Science Fair - Indoor Garden Project
In this project, I am testing different colored LED lights with different plants to see which grows the best. I am using 6 colors. (Blue,Green,Yellow,Purple,Red, Normal)
Step 1: Step 1: Build the Box
1. Build the exterior of the project out of wood.
Make sure you allow enough room for the pot, the light, and the amount of space the plant will take up. Also, be sure to divide each section exactly evenly.
Step 2: Step 2: Add the Lamp Holders
Attach the lamp holders that will mount the
light to the inside of the top. Make sure it is centered and sturdy. Place the gang boxes on top of the project centered with the light and screw it in. The gang boxes are the blue boxes on top.
Step 3: Step 3: Let the Lights Shine!
Then do the wiring to actually make the light work. Make sure the wiring is in parallel form.
Plug the cord into a timer and set it to run for 12 hours every day.
Step 4: Set Up the Plants
Wrap Aluminum Foil around the bottom of the plant to prevent water messes. Then place each plant into the Aluminum Foil and into the Wood boxes.
Tape 6 File Folders to the front hanging down so light does not come in or out. Each time the light turns on, take pictures of each plant and water each with 2 tablespoons of water. Be sure to put the Folder back down after water to ensure accurate results. I recommend that you should use a tripod to help you take straight accurate pictures, but it is not required.
Step 5: Step 5: Repeat Some Steps...
Repeat steps 6-8 every day for 3 weeks. Then see your results. *Please note: you do not need to rebuild the project if you want to do it again.*
Step 6: Step 6: Other Information
Currently I am doing this experiment. When it is done, I will make a youtube video with the results.
If you do this project, I set the timer to 12 hours a day. (Try your own time too! Tell me your results) I also attached a picture of the pots I used and the seeds I used.
Step 7: Results
Here are just a couple pictures I took. Let me know if you what to see even more down below!

This is very similar to to a science fair project a friend of mine did a few years ago. So which colors worked better or best?

Very interesting project. Did you account for the heat differences of the different bulbs?
Have a great day! :-)

Thanks for the comment. I am using LED lights, so they do not get very hot. I made sure they were the same wattage too.
Have a great day too! :)

I believe that plants take green light similar to moonlight. Some people light their indoor gardens with green lights to see at "night" when they're growing plants that bloom by photoperiod.

I thought plants "slept" at night, don't they need some rest ?

Yes, that is why you set the timer to makes the lights on for about 12 hours a day.
