Secret Drawer Compartment

Introduction: Secret Drawer Compartment

I show how to make a secret compartment in a drawer. This can be useful but is also simply awesome to have. It is pretty easy to make and at first glance will be undetectable. A secret compartment in a drawer is only obvious to the owner of the drawer and doesn't require a key or combination. It loses its secrecy only if it's easy to spot, so a good secret compartment is modestly sized and well-camouflaged. Build a false bottom to match the rest of the drawers in a set and keep it shallow, no more than an inch or two.

A false bottom is an internal partition in a container, typically at the bottom of a drawer, suitcase or similar item, enabling the concealment of objects from a cursory examination of the item's contents. A false bottom may be present if the internal dimensions of a container do not match its external dimensions after taking into account the thicknesses of constituent materials and structures used to build the object. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_bottom

You did a great job with this. The hole on the bottom is also good to allow air to escape as the false bottom drops.

    Suggestions for v1.1:

    1) make your supports smaller in length, they're not supporting a whole lot of mass so they don't need to be very substantial.

    2) If you put the supports at the back of the drawer about 1½" forward from the corner, you can use it as a fulcrum. Push the back edge of the bottom down to tip the front edge up. No more pen bits for pushing. :)
