Introduction: Sew a Purse Made of Rope

About: Welcome! Pleased to meet you, I am Barb; a Maker. I have been making things AND explaining how to make things for as long as I can remember. I was all about DIY before it was a popular term. I absolutely love …

Did you know that you can sew rope?! YESSS!!! It opens a whole new dimension to sewing! I realized this a while back and have made a bunch of unique things including bowls, but then I figured out something new! A purse!!!

There's a few thing to consider but I love how quick, easy and strong it is!

Supplies

The main supplies for this is the rope. There are many different ropes on the market. The key is to find one that will fit under your presser foot on the sewing machine as well as not be too floppy when done. But there are no rules, try different ones. Usually the ones used for the bowls are cotton, but here I like the polyester since then it won't stain as easily and can be washed.

  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Rope or this from Home Depot
  • Closure/button
  • Accent Fabric (optional)
  • Clasps for Handle

Step 1: Figuring Starting Length

I wanted a purse that is 6" wide (3" radius) and about 7.25" high. This system can be adjusted to whatever size you want but you just need to figure out how long the starting strip is. The final oval is 19" long which calculated that the starting strip is 13" (19"- 6" = 13")

Sewing with rope means that you use a small zigzag stitch to sew rope to itself around and around... and this builds up to make a thick strong fabric. The key is to use the shape and plan for your design.

*Note: make sure to fuse the ends before cutting as seen below.⬇️

Making bowls is the same way but it ends up not being flat.

Step 2: Make the Full Side

Once the first strip is sewn continue around and around carefully making sure to catch each side of the rope. Slow down around corners and pivot. I like to add some colour and detail (optional) so I used some dyed/bleached denim strips wrapped around the rope randomly. You could even wrap more like here. There is ways to even make your own rope...

Keep measuring to see if you are at the full size that you want.

Step 3: The Closure

Once you have the size that is big enough to fold over to make the body of the purse you need to figure out how to make a closure. At first I was going to use a big button that I made out of polymer clay.

I decided to use a clasp that would work with the oval shape instead. There are so many choices out there or even up-cycle from an old bag. I like the fact that this one did not need any holes made and fit with the oval theme.

Step 4: Finishing the Sides

Once the front and back are done, the side will be made next. I measured from the purse to see how far I wanted the side to continue up. Then the great idea of using it as a loop for the handle clasp was even better! I love great design ideas!

You could even have the strap and side all be one piece but. wanted to be able take the strap off (maybe make a few purse and use the same strap)

To end the shape make sure to heat it until it fuses before you cut it and it fringes; but do not light it on fire!!!

Step 5: Make the Strap

I made the strap 3 thicknesses wide as hat matched the clasps. I then sewed it on by hand with a strong thread. It is a long strap for a cross-body bag (48")

To add some accent and smooth the rope a bit I added a strip over the rope. I made the strip after measuring and then slid it on.

Step 6: Admire Your Work!

I love designing & making purses! This one came together so fast and simple simple sewing! It also does not need a lining. It holds it shape well and is strong as well. Oh, ya, the bird just wanted to be in the picture... As you can tell; I love denim. I wear it and make stuff from it.

Once you try this you may also like to make some unique bowls.
