Introduction: Shark Attack Bulky Knit Hat for Kids
I love the accessories that look like a shark is attacking you, but could not find a pattern for a knit hat, so I designed one.
It is made with bulky yarn that is easy to knit and can be made very quickly.
I love fun, and I love this hat which can be made to fit a toddler.
Step 1: Knit a Basic Bulky Hat
Instructions are for a toddles's size (1-3 years)
Gauge - 3.5 stitches = 1" on 5 mm needles (US size 8) (UK size 6)
TIP - Knit a 1-2" sample of 8 stitches and check your gauge. If you don't have the right number of stitches, either increase or decrease the size of you knitting needles to get the correct gauge.
Use a grey bulky yarn like Berocco Comfort Chunky from Webs Yarns
Using size 5mm needles, Cast on 8 sts
Purl 1 row
Knit row, increasing 1 in each stitch = 16 stitches
Purl 1 row
Knit 1, increase 1 in next stitch - repeat to end of row = 24 stitches
Purl 1 row
Knit 2, increase 1 in next stitch - repeat to end of row = 32 stitches
Purl 1 row
Knit 3, increase 1 in next stitch - repeat to end of row = 40 stitches
Purl 1 row
Knit 4, increase 1 in next stitch - repeat to end of row = 48 stitches
Purl 1 row
Knit 5, increase 1 in next stitch - repeat to end of row = 56 stitches
Purl 1 row
Stop increasing stitches and knit even rows for 4 1/2"
Knit 6, increase 1 in next stitch - repeat to end of row= 64 stitches
Knit until piece measures 5 1/2" )
Bind off loosely
Cut yarn leaving 18" and sew up the back seam
Now comes the fun part - turning it into a shark...
Step 2: Tail Fin
Make the back fin with using same size needles and gray bulky yarn
Cast on 4 sts
K2, put a marker on the needle, K 2
Next row - Knit to marker and slide it onto your needle, then Inc 1 st in next st, K to end of row
Repeat this row until you have 18 stitches
Cast off and leave a 12" tail of yarn
Sew the cast on edge to the top back seam of your hat as shown in the picture
Step 3: Front Fin
Knit a triangle using same needles and bulky gray yarn
Cast on 2 sts
K 1 row
Inc in 1st stitch and knit to the end
K 1 row
Repeat until you have 6 sts on the needle
K 1 row
Cast off 4 sts - this completes the fin
Cast off leaving 12" of yarn to sew to the front of the hat as shown
Step 4: Eyes
You can make eyes from 4 ply yarn and a 4 mm crochet hook
or you can use buttons for eyes
Make a magic ring (or ch 2)
Sc 8 stitches in the magic ring
Join to make a circle
Cut off yarn leaving 12" of yarn
Sew the eyes to the hat as shown
Step 5: Make the Shark Teeth

It looks so much more complicated but once you break it down it's easier than it looks (for people who can knit!). This is awesome! Thank you for sharing your work!

Thanks for the feedback. I was trying to make it as simple as possible.
