Introduction: Simple 3D Printed Magnetic Stir Plate

A simple 3D printed magnetic stir plate for agitating and mixing solutions, or ambient temperature microbial cultures(eg. yeast starter culture, sprirulina culture). Low-cost and simple assembly. Design was made with Fusion360

Supplies

Step 1: 3D Print Files

Files are hosted on printables: https://www.printables.com/model/521663-simple-magnetic-stir-plate

Print in PLA with 20% infill, no supports and no bed adhesion.

the print should take around 9.5 hours and use 70 g of filament.

Step 2: Wire Together Electronics

Connect the power jack and the motor to the PWM speed controller.

  • Use wire strippers to expose the a 5 mm length of each end of 2 separate 30mm stretches of 20 gauge wire.
  • Screw the phillips head screw on the terminal block to tightly connect one of the exposed sections of the wire to the power jack and the other exposed section of wire into the DC In terminal block on the PWM speed controller.
  • Make sure to connect negative to negative and positive to positive.
  • Similarly connect the red and black wires from the DC motor to the positive and negative motor terminal block, respectively, on the PWM speed controller.

Step 3: Attach Electronics Into the 3D Printed Base

Place the electronics into the 3D printed base as shown.

Tighten the nut that comes with the PWM speed controller onto the potentiometer, to secure the speed controller.

Fit the Knob onto the speed controller potentiometer as shown.

Use hot glue gun to secure the motor and power jack in place.

Step 4: Place Magnets

Insert 2 magnets into each of the holes on the 3D printed magnet holder part.

Make sure that the magnets on either side of the magnet holder are in opposite orientations from one another.

Hot glue the magnets into the magnet holder.

Place the magnet onto the DC motor so that the shaft is fully inserted into the magnet holder.

Step 5: Secure Lid Onto Base

Align the holes from the lid onto the screw holes of the base.

Screw the M3 screws into tighten the lid onto the base.

Step 6: Plug in Power Cord and Enjoy

Plug in the power cord.

Turn the potentiometer knob clockwise and observe the magnets spin.

Place a stir bar into the vessel you wish to mix and place on the stir plate and enjoy.
