Intro: Simple DIY Blanket or Quilt Rack

This was a simple project that satisfied a need more than anything and, as always, instead of buying one, it was much cheaper and also more fun to just build one. It's made from super cheap materials, yet it's strong and sturdy. All you'll need is a couple of pine boards and some dowels.

Items we used to make this:

  • Pine boards (1x10)
  • Dowels (we used 1" dowels)
  • Scrap piece of 2x lumber (for the bottom brace)
  • Of course you'll need tools and some glue

STEP 1: Making the Sides

To make the design a little more interesting, I marked out a semi-random pattern and then cut it out of both side panels using the band saw. It's a pretty generic design, but it works. We made these about 3.5 feet tall.

STEP 2: Prepping the Side for the Dowels

I marked out the some lines using the dowel as a spacer to get an idea of the spacing. I also folded a blanket to make sure the thickness when folded would fit between the rungs. Once I had the placement figured out, I clamped both side panels together and drilled the snuggest of holes I could that would receive the dowels using a forstner bit.

When I was finished drilling the holes, I put a nice edge on the panels using a router. I also cut a strip out of a piece of scrap 2x6 I had laying around to make the bottom brace. It just got glued into place, nailed and then clamped.

STEP 3: Placing the Dowels

I cut the dowels a bit longer that what was needed. Actually, probably way more than was needed. Anyhow, I ran these through the holes, glued them in and nailed them in where I could.

Once they were in place and had dried for a bit, I cut the protruding ends off with a flush trim saw and then sanded down the remaining material until it was flush.

The last thing I did, after giving the whole thing a good sanding, was applied some stain and then a couple of coats of tung oil.

STEP 4: All Done!

That's it. It is quite a bit smaller than most traditional quilt racks, but it needed to be to fit in the space we wanted. The blankets fit nicely and it gave them a home, so... mission accomplished.
