As I browsed through Instructables, I noticed something. I had forgotten to participate in the Go Big challenge, with only four hours left! I had lots of motivation, but no ideas! I glanced around my desk, and found a pack of crayons. Instantly, I could not focus on anything else! After an hour, this simple creation was made and lots of cleanup needed to be fulfilled. I hope you enjoy my tutorial and follow my steps to get a creativity boost yourself!

Supplies

16 Crayons

A generous amount of cornstarch

A 5"x2" piece of paper

A marker

Two pieces of tape

Step 1: Step 1: Peel and Grate Many Crayons

The first step in this process is definitely the most tedious one. First, I peeled the labels off the 16 crayons, and then painstakingly grated them with a grater to make it quicker for them to melt in the microwave. However, I made four bowls containing each four similar-colored crayons since I wanted the giant crayon to be multicolored.

Step 2: Step 2: Make the Mold

To make the mold, I looked around my cabinets to find a material that could be easily imprinted but also hold its own shape. After rummaging, I found a box of cornstarch. After this, I again rummaged the house to find a shape that could mimic a crayon shape, but scaled up many times. I ultimately found a deodorant tube, which I pressed into the cornstarch.

Step 3: Step 3: Microwave and Pour Crayons

This next step requires a lot of waiting. First, I melted one bowl containing four grated crayons for about a minute and a half, stirred it around with an old chopstick, and poured it into the mold. Then I repeated this process three more times until the mold was filled completely.

Step 4: Step 4: Clean, Sculpt, and Coat the Crayon

After waiting five minutes for the wax inside the mold to cool, I pulled the crayon out and quickly realized it was far from perfect. First, I wiped the it with a paper towel to get the outer cornstarch off, then I carved the outer layers off with a knife and cleaned up the tip and sides with more cutting.

After this, on some parchment paper (optional), I melted two red crayons that were cut into pieces. After these melted (3-5 minutes), I started coating one side of the giant crayon by rubbing it on the waxy parchment paper. I found this worked quite well, but didn't cover all of the spots. I warmed the waxy sheet up again and then applied the melted wax to the places that were lacking.

Step 5: Step 5: Make the Wrapper

For making the wrapper, I found a piece of light purple paper and then cut it into a 5" by 2" rectangle. Subsequently, I lettered "Giant Crayon" on the paper. As a recommendation, you could make designs or a different calligraphy style if you did this yourself.

Step 6: Draw With the Crayon!

I had fun making some designs with this crayon, and since I used different color layers, I was delighted to see color layering, making for an even more fun drawing.
