Introduction: Simple Small Desktop Wooden Stand / Holder for Different Purposes

I made this simple Instructable as a gift for a friend.

I saw that he asked on a Woodworking's Facebook Group (that by chance I was a member in), if someone can create such horizontal stand for him, with charge of course...

So while having a lot of free time during the Coronavirus lockdown, I immediatelly sent him a private message - "Don't worry, I making the stand for you" (free of course...)

He needed the stand for putting a tool related to smoking (the one you can see at the picture) and gave me the dimensions.

Of course that you can make this stand for other different purposes, that you want to put on your desk, like a pen, or other decorative items...

I took some scrap wood / leftovers and started this quick project.

The last name of the friend is BOARON, so I decided to surprise him and combine his name in the stand. He liked it a lot :)

Materials:

  • Scrap wood
  • Screws.
  • Wood glue.
  • Foto Transfer Potch (Optional)
  • Clear protective topcoat

Step 1: Cutting a Piece of Wood for the Base

I started by cutting a 18mm pine board to the required dimensions (~22cm*7cm), using the miter saw.

Step 2: Preparing the Dremel Circle Cutter

I prepare my Dremel 4000 & the Line & Circle Cutter Accessory (678), to cut the rounded shapes.

Finally I found a use for this Dremel accessory :)

You can use a Jigsaw as well, but it's less accurate to make the rounded shapes manually...

This accessory uses a special cutting bit (Dremel 561 Multipurpose Cutting Bit).

Step 3: Marking the Half Circle Position on the Base

I marked the center of the wood from all edges of the rectangle sides.

The Dremel circular cutter has a nail which should be placed in the center of the circle, as an axis. The cutting bit turns arround the axis for cutting accurate circles. This accessory is great!

Step 4: Cutting the Half Circle Shape on the Base

Note that you put the center axis at the side of the wood that isn't visible later, so you won't see the axis hole :)

Step 5: Sanding the Base

I sanded the base using a Sanding paper / Sander.

Step 6: Marking the Text & Vertical Pices Positions on the Base

As I wrote at the intro, I wanted to put a text in the middle, between the vertical pieces of the stand, so I measured and marked the positions.

The vertical pieces position is ~12cm from each other.

Step 7: Marking the Text "O" Letter Holes Position on the Base

The last name of my friend is BOARON.

Since the name has 2 Symmetrical "O" letters, I decided to make it more special, and drill the "O" letters.

So, I put the printed text to see the position, and marked the "O" positions.

I took a drill bit which matches to the size of the letters in the printed text.

Step 8: Drilling the "O" Letter Holes on the Base

I drilled the 2 "O" letter holes on the base.

Step 9: Sanding the Holes on the Base

I sanded the 2 "O" letter holes, using a dremel sanding attachment.

Step 10: Cutting the Circle Shape for the Vertical Pieces (1)

After finishing with the base, I started preparing the vertical pieces of the stand.

I used the same method described for the base, to cut a rounded shape for the top of the vertical pieces.

Step 11: Cutting the Circle Shape for the Vertical Pieces (2)

Step 12: Cutting the Vertical Pieces

I cut the 2 pieces with the rounded shape. About 5cm long.

Step 13: Sanding the Vertical Pieces

I sanded the 2 pieces using a sanding paper, for removing the sharp edges of the circle.

Step 14: Gluing the Vertical Pieces

I put glue on each piece of wood and attached to the base.

Step 15: Connecting the Vertical Pieces to the Base

In order to easily connect the pieces to the base with screws, I used my Kreg 90° Corner Clamp. (Great tool!)

Step 16: Wood Part Is Done

Step 17: Text / Photo Transfer to the Wooden Base

After finishing with the woodworking part, I started with the photo transfer process.

Step 18: Foto Transfer Potch

In this case I used a Foto Transfer Potch' material.

I spreaded the material on both the paper and wood.

Step 19: Placing the Printed Paper

I placed the coated printed text side down on the wood.

Step 20: Removing the Paper

After drying, I removed the paper using a wet mop.

As you can see, this transfer failed! :(

I was using an Inkjet printer, while a Laser printed is recommeded... But in other transfers I made it successfully also with an Inkjet printer.

Step 21: Fixing the Text

In case that you transfer a black printed image / text (as in this project) and the transfer failed, sometimes it's possible to fix the text using a black pen / marker pen.

I did it in this case and I'm happy with the result.

Finally, I painted the stand with a protective topcoat.
