Make a simple, elegant floating wall shelf using laminated pine that you will find at your local department store.
This simple wall shelf looks like it is floating on the wall, but it's secured using keyhole brackets at the back of the shelves. It's pretty easy to make and the only tools you need are a drill/driver (or screwdriver), and a jigsaw.

YOU WILL NEED:

Step 1: Marking the Saw Route
Cut or have cut to length the laminated pine shelves. The measures will be 3 of 800 x 200 and 3 of1200 x 300 mm. Mark the sawing route as seen on the diagrams above.
Step 2: Cut the Slots
Use a jigsaw to cut out the slots as shown in the diagrams above, and also a 40 mm long rebate for mounting the keyhole hangers at the back of [2] uprights.
GOOD TO KNOW: For perfect straight lines use a steel ruler to draw out the cut lines.
Step 3: Sanding and Checking
Before assembly, take the time to sand all the boards and cut edges nice and smooth.
Step 4:
If you are painting the horizontal boards as we did for our shelf, do this now.
Step 5: Assembling the Screws
Assemble the screws for the corroborating the shelf to the wall using a drill.
Step 6: Assembling the Shelf
Slot the uprights into the shelves. If necessary, tap gently with a rubber mallet to lock the pieces together.

This is a really nice looking system i was wondering how stable it would be if it was sat on the floor rather than hung

You might be able to also screw those flat 90 degree shelf brackets behind it, it could help stop it from rocking back and forth, depending on how large you make it...

We thought about it too. It is OK, I mean, you can`t sit on it but it will not fall apart or something.

Cool thats wicked i'm in a rental and am not allowed to damage the walls so i would need it to sit on the floor or ontop of a chest of drawers

I was thinking about you and you know what, you can make it more stable when you assemble few extra walls to support it from the backwards. Or you can try adding more sides, that would do too.
Btw, have you seen this instructable: https://www.instructables.com/id/Japanese-Bondage-Shelf/ ? This is also good for a rental apartment.

Cheers yes i had seen that and i might try that out at some point what i was looking for specifically was a square frame idea as it fits the design of my room but this in a slightly smaller size would also work well. adding a backboard is a good idea and would get rid of some of the hardboard that i have lying around, also it would hide the ugly walls. ;)
