Simple T-shirt to Skirt
Intro: Simple T-shirt to Skirt
Make an easy skirt from a t-shirt. I bought mine for $3 at the craft store. The possibilities are endless since you could use any t-shirt--including old vintage Ts. I decided on neon yellow for a cheap way to embrace a trend. The finished product will have a little ruffle down the front. T-shirt jersey is a great and easy fabric. It does not fray, so you don't have to finish all edges unless you want to. I prefer unfinished....gives it a bit of edge!
STEP 1:
I chose an XL size T. I am a size 8 and I had enough fabric to fit. If you need more fabric, you could use two t-shirts and sew them together.
STEP 2:
Cut off the arms. I then used my rotary cutter to get a straight line across just above the armpit area.
STEP 3:
Just to make sure I was on the right track, I slipped the jersey tube on to see how much extra fabric I had.
STEP 4:
Based on my try-on, I cut several inches off to my desired length. I also cut straight down the tube, basically making one big rectangle.
STEP 5:
After cutting, I went back to the mirror to pin the skirt. I chose to use the hemmed part of the shirt at my waist. I started at the waist, pinning to desired tightness. I then pinned down the cut in an A-line shape, making the ruffle smaller as I approached the bottom hem.
STEP 6:
CAREFULLY remove your skirt so you don't get poked by pins. Check to make sure the pins are in a straight line. Note that the pins give a bit of an A-line.
STEP 7:
Sew a seam alongside your pins. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end to ensure your seam doesn't come out.
STEP 8:
Done and done. Enjoy your new skirt! I plan to make a few of these next summer. I'm considering adapting this a bit to make a long one in a nice jewel tone jersey for fall.
