Every year I knit myself and my sister matching scarves. It is funny because she and I are complete opposites. She is a super girly girl with blond curly hair and I am a no nonsense practical gal with brown hair and eyes. People don't believe us that we are sisters. We have six years between us but our mother insisted that we dress the same.

When I learned how to knit I made us scarves they were the same style and yarn but in different colors that suited each of us. My sister's scarf was pink sparkles and mine was black variegated. This year I let her pick the yarn out and she selected Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick. Mine is Pumpkin and hers is Silver Gray.

The pattern is actually a super simple 1 line simple lace pattern called Garter Stitch Lace. It looks dense because the yarn is so thick but it is light and airy.

Here is the pattern

Garter Stitch Lace
Cast on 20 Stitches for a thick scarf 10 stitches for a thinner scarf.
Row 1: K2, YO, K2TOG repeat across
Rinse and Repeat until your run out of yarn.
Fringe in the YO spaces and your done!

Does this patter require multiples of 4 or multiples of 2? I'm confused as 20 is divisible by 4, but 10 is not. So I could see multiples of 4 +2 or multiples of 4 or multiples of 2. I feel like there might be a different look between the number of stitches cast on.

The pattern is multiples of 4 plus two. It is just the Garter Stitch Lace pattern. If you google it you will find a lot of examples and videos.

doesn't knitting 2 stitches together decrease the stitch count? do you have to add stitches anywhere?

yes a k2tog is a decrease so make sure you do the YO or yarn over as the pattern suggests this will keep your count at 20.

These scarves are absolutely gorgeous. My sister's birthday is coming up and I think I may steal your tradition! How many balls of yarn did you use to knit these?

I used two skeins for each but they are really long. They wrap around two times and hang down. You could get away with one skein.

I used size 13. It was what was recommended on the ball band.

I love your scarfs, I will make one form myself, but I have a question the patterns says: Rinse and Repeat, What does the Rinse means?

Oh it doesn't mean anything in the pattern. It a joke a reference to the directions you find on a shampoo bottle. Just keep following the pattern until your scarf is as long as you would like it.

What coolness! I will have to try this stitch because, to be honest with you, I thought the scarves looked like they were crocheted. I hate to crochet! But I *will* knit something that looks crocheted.

What a nice thing to say! I get asked if my scarf is crocheted when I wear it. It is actually much more flexible than crochet I think you will be happy with it.
