Introduction: Skillet Cookie

There's a very southern thing about cooking things in a cast iron skillet. We're reminded of those trekking across the wild west, roughing it out in the wild. Many delicious recipes involve cast iron cookware, so why not make a cookie in one?

The instructions provided here should make a cookie large enough for 5 or 6 people for about $15. It should take about 10-15 minutes to prepare the ingredients and about 30 minutes to cook, so be ready to invest 40-45 minutes on this.

Be sure to read the directions thoroughly before starting.

Step 1: Collect Ingredients

Here's what you'll need:

1 stick unsalted butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 egg
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup dark chocolate chips

In addition to these ingredients, you'll also need an 8 inch cast iron skillet and some vanilla ice cream.

Step 2: Preheat Oven

Preheat the oven to 350°F

Step 3: Melt Butter

On the stove, melt 1 stick of butter in the skillet at medium-low heat.

Step 4: Add Sugars and Vanilla

Pour 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup light brown sugar, and 1 tsp vanilla extract into the melted butter and mix until blended.

Step 5: Remove Skillet From Heat

Remove the skillet from the heat. Let the skillet cool for about 5 minutes. The pan should still be warm, but not hot.

NOTE: After letting the skillet cool for a bit, work quickly until the skillet is ready to put in the oven. The dough should not be allowed to cool too much from steps 6-8.

Step 6: Whisk Egg Into Mixture

Crack the egg into the skillet and mix it in.

NOTE: Make sure the egg does not scramble. You want the egg to mix into the mixture, not cook.

Step 7: Add Rest of Ingredients (except Chocolate)

Pour in 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 tsp baking soda, and 1/4 tsp salt into the mixture. Stir until the mixture is smooth.

NOTE: Again, you want to work diligently here. Do not allow the dough to cool too much.

NOTE: Take care not to spill any of the ingredients as you stir them in. Try pouring the flour in slowly to prevent any messes.

Step 8: Add Chocolate Chips

Stir in 1 cup chocolate chips.

Step 9: Place Skillet in Oven

Place the skillet in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until the cookie is golden on the top and edges. Check with a toothpick to make sure the cookie is cooked through.

NOTE: If the cookie is still not finished after the allotted time, add time in 5 minute increments.

Step 10: Serve and Enjoy!

Take the cookie out of the oven and allow the cookie to cool for a few minutes. Serve the cookie immediately in skillet or in bowls with vanilla ice cream.

NOTE: The skillet will be hot. Be sure to use a mitt or a potholder when removing the skillet from the oven.
