Introduction: Smart Light Bio-Material

I developed 2 biomaterials to prototype this smart light Bio-Luminaire. People tend to forget to switch on/off lights when they leave the house. This aesthetically interesting hanging luminaire comes with a bulb that uses photosensitive sensor to automatically switch on the lights when its dark(at night) and off when there's light (during the day). The sensor also measures Temperature, it changes colour at different temperature levels. This hanging luminaire can be used indoors, it gives your room a unique nice look and decoration. Using Biomaterials prevent negative effects after being disposed or modified. The smart light uses an APP that you can download in your smartphone to operate the light.

Step 1: Making Mould

  • I did the leaf shape CAD model on solidworks 200mm long and 180mm wide
  • Used a 3mm MDF to cut to desired shape on laser cutter.
  • cut 10 shapes
  • Covered the shapes in plastic( bread plastic specifically)
  • when casting I pour the material on plastic to prevent the material from sticking on the mould

Step 2: Mixing the First Material

  • have 3 tissue paper, unfold and tear them into smaller pieces.
  • Soak enough tissue paper for 10-20 minutes in a bowl
  • Drain water from soaked tissue paper, add crushed eggshells and a little bit of glue
  • Mix
  • Cast onto 5 moulds
  • Exposed to the sun, leave to dry for 4 days

Step 3: Mixing the Second Material

  • Take the hemp yarn apart, cut them into not very small pieces.
  • Mix the flour with, water, wood chips, and fabric
  • Cast onto 5 moulds
  • Bake for 10 minutes and set them to dry for a day

Step 4: Removing the Panels From Mould

  • Make the top part(a circle) from wood (200diameter)
  • Drill the top part at the centre, the bit size must be the size of the smart light cable
  • Take off the panels from moulds
  • attach the panels to the top part made from wood with screws
