Introduction: Smokey Paprika and Beet Hummus With Beet Pita Bread

The color of this appetizer is amazing! I love the way the beets lend their beautiful red hue to this hummus and pita bread recipe. The vibrant red hummus goes perfectly with the pinkish pita bread. As well as an awesome color, this appetizer has a super taste! If you love hummus, you will love this recipe. I used roasted garlic, tahini paste, cumin, and smoked paprika. The flavors blend to create a dip that is perfect for a snack or a fun party food. Served with your very own DIY pink pita bread, it’s sure to be a conversation starter.
Ingredients:
15 ounce can of beets (save the liquid)
2 teaspoons fast rise yeast
1 tablespoon olive plus extra for frying
3 teaspoons Kosher salt
3 cups all purpose flour
15 ounce can garbanzo beans drained
3 tablespoons tahini paste
2 teaspoons roasted minced garlic
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

Step 1: Creating the Pita Bread

In the bowl of a stand mixer with the regular paddle, add one cup of the liquid drained from the can of beets. If you don’t have enough for one cup, top off your cup with a little water.

Step 2: Creating the Pita Bread

Add 2 teaspoons fast rise yeast to the beet liquid. Wait five five minutes.

Step 3: Creating the Pita Bread

Add 2 teaspoons of Kosher salt.

Step 4: Creating the Pita Bread

Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil.

Add in 3 cups of all purpose flour.

Run the mixer on the low setting until the ingredients are incorporated, about 3 minutes.

Knead the dough for 4 or 5 minutes until soft.

Coat the dough in 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Place in a large bowl and cover. Set aside for an hour. Dough should double in size.

Cut dough into six equal pieces. Look at that color. Isn’t that pretty?

With a rolling pin, roll out dough into round shapes with an approximate 6 inch diameter.

In a large frying pan on medium high heat on the stovetop, add 1 tablespoon olive oil. Fry pita dough on each side for approximately 30 seconds. Turn over with a spatula. When you have fried all of the dough, wrap them in a towel and set aside.

Step 12: Creating the Hummus

Add garbanzo beans to a food processor.

Step 13: Creating the Hummus

Add the beets.

Step 14: Creating the Hummus

Add 2 teaspoons of roasted minced garlic.

Step 15: Creating the Hummus

Add 2 teaspoons lemon juice.

Step 16: Creating the Hummus

Add 3 tablespoons tahini paste.

Step 17: Creating the Hummus

Add 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika.

Step 18: Creating the Hummus

Add 1 teaspoon Kosher salt.

Step 19: Creating the Hummus

Add 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper.

Step 20: Creating the Hummus

Add 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin. Finally! You can run the food processor on the shred/slice setting for approximately 30 seconds or until all of the ingredients have been incorporated. Yea! You made the hummus!

Step 21: Enjoy!

At this point point, you can slice your pita bread and top your hummus with some parsley flakes or olive oil and serve. Your family and friends will be delighted when they see the vibrant colors.

While it seems that there were quite a few steps, this recipe wasn’t really difficult at all.
