Step 1: Get the Stuff
You need:
- a pumpkin
- glycerine
- distilled water
- an aluminium ashtray or bowl
- some toothpicks
- air-drying clay
- transparent paper
- florist's wire
- tealights (at least three)
- some drawing pins (with flat heads)
_____________________________________________________________________________
Man braucht:
- einen Kürbis
- Glycerin (in der Drogerie erhältlich)
- destilliertes Wasser
- Zahnstocher
- lufttrocknender Ton
- transparentes Papier
- Blumendraht
- Teelichter
- Reißzwecken
Step 2: Prepare the Pumpkin
First hollow the pumpkin out and carve a nice scary face. Important: The mouth has to be in a trapezium shape, cause we want to give him real clay theeth later on.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Step 3: Shape the Theeth
Take the air-drying clay and shape some sharp teeth (as sharp as clay can be :D) and put in each tooth a toothpick. Now you place them somewhere, where they can dry for at least 24 hours. If you like, colour your pumpkin's teeth the next day.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Step 4: Seal the Eye Holes
We don't want the fog coming out of the eyes. Therefore we seal the eyes with a piece of transparent paper and fix it with some drawing pins.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Step 5: A Stand for the Ashtray
The next step is to prepare a stand for the aluminium ashtray. This step is needed to ensure that the tealights can stand under the aluminium ashtray easily. Therefore you prick the first corner with the florist's wire, wind the wire-ending with the wire, make a 90 degrees angle, and bend the wire to the next corner. Repeat these steps for every corner until your at the beginning. It should look similar to the 2nd picture. Finally check if the tealights fit under your ashtray easily.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Step 6: The Glycerine Solution
To make a glycerine solution you mix one part of glycerine with two parts of distilled water. Afterwards stir the solution with a spoon until it's getting clearly.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Step 7: Assemble the Parts and Do the First Test
Now we have to put the teeth in the mouth. If necessary clip off the endings of the toothpicks.
Place the three tealights on the bottom of the pumpkin, light them up and put the ashtray or your bowl over it. After that pour some of your glycerine solution into the bowl and close the pumpkin. Congratulations. You've done it.
After about a minute you can see your pumpkin starting to smoke.
Look at all the pictures we made of our version. Feel free to share your versions in the comments below.
_____________________________________________________________________________

I haven't seen a clear answer here, so I'm just going to ask...
Is this safe INSIDE? Isn't Glycerine toxic?
(Cool effect, though!)

Excellent work -very spooky! Can't wait to try this! One final touch you might consider, though - perhaps a bit of gooey "blood" dripping from the fangs, the chin, etc... Fantastic work!

I really like the glycerin approach. Dry ice and Propylene Glycol are either expensive or hard to come by.

Great pumpkin !!!

I love this..to make it much easier however and safer..I think I will use a bowl with water and dry ice and just set those inside my spooky little fire eating guy. Good idea with this! Happy Halloween!

After reading comments, it sounds like the distilled water ensures that no dangerous toxins are omitted in to the air? Can anyone confirm that this isn't dangerous to be around and inhale? If it's 100% safe, then this is too cool! Hope someone comes with an answer soon...we are having our annual H'ween party tomorrow and this would definitely impress! :)

Btw...if u don't have clay, make a salt dough and bake your teeth at 90-100C for about an hour. Easy! :)
Reply 10 years ago on Introduction
This is really helpful. Just out of curiosity, is it because any pumpkin carved teeth would get too hot and look, well, non-tooth-like after a while?
Reply 10 years ago on Introduction
Not necessarily...clay teeth are just another way to spruce up a pumpkin I guess. Something unique and different - and looks cool! If u haven't already, check out the incredible little pumpkins with vampire teeth - search for pumpkin teeth. They are genius! :)

Very cool I love the teeth.

Could you just use premade fog machine fluid? Would it react with the heat the same?
Reply 10 years ago on Introduction
Yes it should, premade fog fluid is just glycerin and water, I think premade is around 1/8 to 1/4 glycerin rate, I have mixing my own some, seem like 1/4 to 1/3 best for making thick fog.

I'm sorry but I don't know that, maybe somebody who has fog machine fluid can try it for us :D I think in fog machines you also need presure...
