Battery From Deodorant & Pennies (rechargeable)
Intro: Battery From Deodorant & Pennies (rechargeable)
With 10 pennies & Speed Stick Deodorant I will show you how to make a battery to power an led or more depending on the amount of batteries used. Entered into the pocket size contest PLEASE VOTE
STEP 1: Small Amount of Deodorant
deodorant contains zinc that is why it can be used , take a small amount less than the size of a penny when flattened
STEP 2: Vinegar/Lemon Juice/Salt Water/Baking Soda
Get any of the above and put it into a cup you can reach into. I used vinegar
STEP 3: Cardboard/Paper Towel/Coffee Filter/Cotton T-shirt/
Take one of your pennies and trace it on the cardboard or whatever your using. Make 10 per 1volt
After you are done cutting them put them into the cup of vinegar for 5sec or so.
Take them out and pat them with a dry paper towel.
put it on your deodorant.

STEP 6: Wrap in Tape Attach an Led
wrap it in tape if you want and hook up an led. The penny is positive and the deodorant is negative and you have power
STEP 7: Expand
the zinc in the deodorant is suspended among other ingredients so it can be recharged via solar panel the possibilities are endless

STEP 8: Add on Solar Panel for LED
If you have an extra solar panel you can recharge the batteries and light an LED here is an example in my fish tank.
I am planning to add more blue LEDs soon.

But, once the vinegar dries up, dont you need to "refill". In your experience, how long it lasts without refilling (re-constructing)...?
Any way, thanks for sharing..

I don't think it's a matter of the vinegar being "wet" once it is saturated into the cardboard dry or not it will still be there so it should work indefinably.

I remember making a project like this in grade school for a science fair.
But some things I've learned over the years;
any pennies made after 1982 are 92% zinc. But, they are coated in copper, so some sanding is required to sand them down. The vinegar, which has acid lets the metal flow as ions throughout the battery. The battery dies once all the potential energy is drained from it, not when the vinegar dries or anything like that. This is a chemical process. That being said, I'm NOT sure hooking up a solar panel can recharge these batteries. I'm looking into that as I type this...
BUT one thing to be noted, I've seen other people build 10 cell batteries using the method I stated, and it lasted 2 1/2 weeks only powering an LED. That being said, there's no clue as to what happens when it's connected to a solar panel, as I haven't seen that applied to any of these batteries.
It may be possible, but I have yet to find out. I'll update upon finding the result.
