Spiced Mulled Wine

Intro: Spiced Mulled Wine

This typical winter drink – enjoyed mostly around Christmas is made of wine to which mulling spices, sugar, citrus fruit and raisins are added. Every country has its own way of preparing this tasty beverage and so its taste may vary slightly and also its name (mulled wine, glögg, glögi, glühwein, vin chaud, vin fiert, ...) but no matter what it’s called and where it’s made it’s still the number one Christmas drink. Well, at least for me.

So if you are thinking of making this
warm beverage any time soon then this is the recipe for you! It’s simply delicious. You can omit the extra bit of alcohol (rum, brandy) if you prefer it that way. However, raisins and almonds go hand in hand with this drink so I suggest you keep them in your drink rather than omitting them. Believe me I know what I am saying as I am not a big fan of raisins. This was our second attempt (trying to get the right balance of flavors) and I think it’s the real deal!

The mulled wine has also brought back some memories from last year when we visited Christmas market in Tallinn. It was absolutely amazing experience and we were so lucky with the weather as well. It was cold. OK, it was freezing but it was SNOWING when we arrived. Big thick snowflakes were falling down from the skies and in the evening when the lights went on you thought you were in a fairy tale.

So let’s get started!

STEP 1: Ingredients:

  • 1 Bottle Red Wine (750 ml)
  • 1 Orange
  • 1 Lemon
  • A Few Ginger Slices
  • 10 Cloves
  • 10 Cardamon seeds
  • 2 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 100ml Rum (Brandy or Whiskey) – optional
  • 4 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon Orange Zest
  • A Handful of Raisins
  • A Handful of Almonds

Makes: 4 portions

Preparation: Preparation 10 minutes + Cooking Time 15 minutes

STEP 2: Method:

Pour the wine into a saucepan, add cloves, cardamom seeds, 2-3 slices of ginger, cinnamon sticks and sugar. Throw in about a teaspoon of orange zest, 2-3 orange slices as well as lemon slices. Pour in freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice. For a lighter version add 100ml of water. Bring to the boil, let the sugar dissolve and reduce the heat to the lowest point.

Let it simmer slowly for 15 minutes so the spices have time to infuse the wine (make sure it’s not boiling otherwise you could end up with a non-alcoholic version).

Right before the end pour in rum (optional).

Meanwhile:

Roughly chop some almonds and throw them altogether with some raisins into mugs or heatproof glasses and pour over strained wine.

Garnish with an orange slice and serve hot/warm. Don’t forget the spoons so you can fish out the almonds and raisins!

Happy Holidays!
